Ok my trusty Rover 414si has for the last 2 years had a problem with the electric windows. Something made a snapping sound once and the local garage just blocked them off which is a major pain in the ass. Its in the shop now for its MOT which its passed but has needed £276.00 worth of work on the brakes (ouch!) and the windows were going to cost £180.00 EACH just for the parts which when you add the labour is more than the cars worth. I cant continue without my windows so can anyone recommend a cheap solution for getting them working (no brick jokes please). I dont care how or if it costs me a couple of hundred quid - just bear in mind Im totally engineer stupid and can get lego wrong so complicated mechanics are a no no!!

Surely there must be a viable answer!!?

1) go to the library and get a Haynes book of lies.
2) Strip out the door cards. A screwdriver and a £5 socket set from asda will do nicely I bet.
3) The mechanism should be fairly easy to see, get a torch and have a good look.
4) Poke stuff with a big screwdrivers and say hmmmm....
5) Report back.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Edd

yea take the door card off and see if theres anything obvious wrong

The mechanism has something snapped off. No idea what or what it does but the bloke showed it me at the time. The spare part was £180.00 to fix it but he just didnt want to do it so was basically adding a load of labour on to make it not worthwhile. As for opening it again and looking I wouldnt honestly know what to look for.

Im starting to think I might just have to put up with it for another year then change the car.

fixed it for you

Like I said the mechanisms boned - something has snapped. If I was to open it up and look again Id still come back and say "mechanisms boned - something has snapped" so theres genuinely nothing constructive I could get from doing this.

Im not trying to be a cock - Im just not comfortable messing around with my car - I just break things. If I dont have enough info for anyone to help thats cool - I just thought Id ask.

Appreciate the advice though chaps cheers.

Which is why I cant justify what the garage wanted to fix it. The car itself is in great condition and runs like a dream so Id need to spend a good £500/£600 to better it in which case Ill make do for another year then change it.

Scrap yard is your friend, along with a mechanically minded mate who works for Beer.  My old MK2 astra ones broke a few times in the ones i had (Common fault methinks).  usualyl £20 from the scrapper, and half a day to remove and refit carefully.  Mechanic would have done it faster, but i wanted to take my time and make sure it was right.
