Yeah get a used door at the scrapyard and swap them.

Or have beer driven mechanic open it up take all but window out tie a flat strap to the bottom of window so you have something to pull it up with and when just tie it to something to hold it up :D

I good way to break even more parts ;)

Chris

Right, heres what you need to do to fix it:

1) Buy a haynes manual (cheap off of ebay)

2) Remove the door card, as described in the above haynes manual.

3) Discover what bit is broken.

4) Drive to scrapyard, and repeat step 2 on a donor 400.

5) Remove a non-broken bit from the doner 400.

6) Repeat step 5 on your 400.

7) Do a reversal of step 5 and fit the working bit to your car.

I guarentee that you can acheive that in one weekend with a screwdriver set, socket set, and a methodical approach with a small amount of cash.

Trust me, Ive worked my way up from knowing absolutely nothing about cars and almost ruining my Mk1 R5 because I was too dumb to carry out routine maintenance, to being extremely confident with a set of spanners.  There is no job I wont attempt on my Rover 45 now, Ill even be doing the cam and fuel pump belts at some time this year, which would have been unthinkable four years ago when I first started out.

Just allow yourself plenty of time and take a slow, methodical approach.  Youll soon figure it all out.

fixed it for you

Like I said the mechanisms boned - something has snapped. If I was to open it up and look again Id still come back and say "mechanisms boned - something has snapped" so theres genuinely nothing constructive I could get from doing this.

Im not trying to be a cock - Im just not comfortable messing around with my car - I just break things. If I dont have enough info for anyone to help thats cool - I just thought Id ask.

Appreciate the advice though chaps cheers.

well how do you expect people to know whats broke if you cant explain/tell them what is broke, where its broke & what the broken thing looks like.
Its easy enough to take a door panel off, couple of screws & plastic pop-rivet things.. if you cant explain, take a picture.

next time buy a car with air con. you dont need to open windows then

I think Ive already answered this question and Im not repeating myself. Everyone else seems to be helping me a lot.

Oh yeah and air con doesnt help you with ticket machines and toll bridges.

He might suggest buying a convertible next ;)

Also, as well as the knowledge on here if you decide to do the repair on your own, if you get stuck you could always google "Rover 400 owners club" and therell be a forum with loads of followers who if you explain the problem and hopefully with some pics theyll be able to point you in the right direction :)

not really.... ive seen swap the door & barrel - your not comfortable to take of a felt covered panel off, then how the f00k are you going to change a door?

get a screw driver out, unscrew whatever is screwed in & then take the panel off. Look at whats broke. Look at what looks the same on ebay.
Post pics...

Or just take it the garage & hand your wallet over... or ask nicely at a local school that does motor mechanics or a bloke down the pub
