My BMW is up for its MOT in the next couple of weeks, so was thinking about getting it serviced at the same time......

But, I have a Service Milage meter......which is 12,000.........so, should I wait until that is nearly down to zero, and get it serviced as and when that happens, or when I get the MOT done, as this will be a year since its last service. It is still showing 4400 until the next service.

Its a BMW 320D.

Cheers

DEViANCE

you may aswell get it done, then you can do the same every year too keep it easy.

theyll be able to reset the service counter back to the full amount once theyve done it.

chrisdicko

Yeah, I was thinking that. But if I did that for 3 years, in theory I loose 12,000 miles of driving if you get me.

Mark

I wouldnt run 12000 miles between service in any car no matter what the manufacturer says - oil changes especially

chrisdicko

Other people have said that to me before to be honest. Why would they give a 12k mile service interval thought? :)

Goblin

I had my car serviced just before its MOT in February. Thats the first time Ive serviced it since I got it in 2003 and it was already six years old then.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo... Again.

Chris

Drop the oil every 6months or 6k, not a massive cost.

chrisdicko

No, not a lot of cost, but Im far too lazy. Its not a Jap performance car or anything, so IMO doesnt need it doing that often.

My personal take on servicing is once a year in line with the schedule/MOT as it fits and use quality oils, etc so youre not likely to be doing the car excess wear.

DEViANCE

it should be at least every year, oil deteriorates over time just as much as over milage.

Mark

Plus, its a diesel - more soot in the oil to worry about

chrisdicko

Thats  it then.....Serviced with the MOT.

Cheers!

Serious

Theres also the chance you forget, then when you take it for the MOT next year the counter will read -4000 miles ;)

Good choice, better getting it serviced a little early. The 12,000 miles, suggested by the maker, is a compromise - wear against cost. Quite often though the actual wear ramps up later on in the cycle, so you could save your engine a bit.
