Not cycled in quite a few years.

Back then i was mainly riding on GTs.

Im looking for a Hardtail or Rigid bike, i think preference would go to MTB, think maybe its classified as Urban MTB these days (would also consider front suspension).

Need advice on good brands to buy, what highlights to look out for when buying etc. I like VFM so if its a flip up between a ferrari and an M3, id sooner have the fully loaded latter and save a few quid.

Im tall, i doubt they do a bike for me, but hopefully someone can point to the closest frame/wheel sizing.

Depends what your budget is, and what sort of riding you want to do.

Spend ideally between £300 - £500.  Avoid disc brakes and full suspension at this price range as they will be junk.
For an Idea, my brakes alone cost nearly £300.

Stick to the bigger brands, like:
GT, Specialized, Kona, Trek, Orange, Giant, and in this price range Claude Butler.

Most bikes go up to to around 22" frames, so you shouldnt have a problem unless your the BFG.

I would say mainly Urban/City riding, but i dont want to limit myself and would rather get an MTB so i have the option later.

As for gear, spec and bikes, its pretty much the same as when i was riding, and common sense really i suppose i.e. your going to get a better specced rigid bike over something with suspension because the suspension is taking away from the price of the rest of the bike.

Ok now i have an idea.

So whats considered a good setup these days for the groupset, still LX, XT?

Deore, LX and XT in the shimano camp.

X.7 and X.9 in Sram.

My moneys on sram.  1:1 shifting ratios, fixed knuckles and stronger springs.

Been offered Specialized Hard Rock, or P1/2 AM from the local store. Told me they have good strong frames and wheels, and lockout fork.

Still looking

I can recommend that bike for urban and off-road.
I use it every day to commute into work and weekends for fun.
