Before anyone goes off on one, no I havent been done by one or anything like that, but coming back from dropping a friend off at Tottenham Hale station I was going along a 40mph road at speedo 39 (satnav gps reading 37mph) past a camera as two chavved up riceboxes came tearing the other way, setting the speed camera off in my direction while i was on the markings (the camera went twice, as in 4 flashes, all while I was still on the markiings). I know I was under the limit, but are there odds that they will try it on and get a fine and points out of me, or should the computer just dismiss it as I was not actually breaking the speed limit, and the fact that there are two simultaneous sets of pictures of me not speeding?! Also, if I do receive a NIP through the post, how should I go about making sure I am not prosecuted for a crime I did not commit?!

Ive had loads similar mate. never heard a thing from them.
They actually take the photo evidence and make sure you have broken the limit.
As you havent they wont bother you.

Jaimz

Spiffing good show :D

They should check up on it anyway. and you wouldnt have to pay as you were not breaking the limit. If they get onto you just explain it politely.

Well this is why we have the road markings on the ground,  in case of strange situations such as a fault with the camera or t**ts messing around as such.

Some do it on purpose to try and get your car flashed.  Or those that think they are clever and drive on the wrong side of the road.

Are you sure it was a standard gatso?  Becasue they will not go off for people coming towards it.  Sounds like it was truvello camera, in which case there is no chance of you being in trouble.

Jaimz

Was a GATSO, for sure. Know the road well and you see people setting them off all the time going towards them.

The gatsos on north road in cardiff go off if a car is going towards em. I know they arent meant to (purple blobs and all that) but they do :) Damn nutters will overtake you there, and POOSHT! the camera goes. Must have more false positives than any other camera I swear.

Have you heard about the new cameras? Something my dad was talking about, they dont flash, they take your picture without needing to flash or something. :| no idea what they are or what they are called.

knighty

the ones with the purple/red lense are front facing ones, there the ones that take a photo of you driving :o
the coloured lense is so it doesent blind you when it flashes in your face ;o

there the square ones, the gatsos (older ones) are the obling ones with square holes in em for the lense/flasg ;)

SPECS.... take an average speed between cameras, so its possible to loose your license within a few miles!!

You will be ok.
They will fine the other cars though, you cant fool a gatso.
The reason it takes 2 pictures is to prove youre speed.

How it works:
The radar sensors detects speeding car...and triggers camera.
Camera takes 2 snaps which are a set time appart. (i.e. .5 second)
The distance traveled by ALL cars in the picture is shown by the white markings on the road. Lets assume the markings are 1 appart.
The time is known and the distance, so the speed is easily calculated for everything in the pictures.

If your car traveled over 2 markings in 0.5 seconds

2 x 0.5s = 1 foot per second.

distance x time = speed

This we know, however they cant prosecute the other guy because he was travelling towards the gatsos lens, so the reading will be nullified as gatsos can only be used to prosecute people driving away from the lens

madmax

gatsos can and do get set off by oncoming traffic, hell ive even managed it on the bike once.

whats the reasons for being nullified with oncoming photos though?
if the markings are visible for the other side, they can still take a reading off the road and more importantly, they get your face on the photo.

Christopher Monkey

I cant for the life of me remember the correct definitions and terms, but it to do with the way it gets set off, its possible for a vehicle do <30 to set off a gatso facing the other way.

Gatsos and Truvelos are on the whole completely unreliable, they can give false readings of speed if the angles arnt exactly right, hence the Germans banned them!

Chris

IIRC the camera result is inadmissable if the photo has more than one car in the shot.

Theyre bringing out new digital ones whichll apparently process your speeding ticket within half an hour and have it on your doorstep the following morning
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.
