Well beginning of the month I passed my Motorbike Theory, CBT, and then Pratical (0minors, tho i dont think i deserved it :P)
Last week I got my first bike, sorry its not up to scratch to some peoples but I wanted to good bike to start on and so went for a SV650.

Done 1300 odd miles in the week (up in shrewsbury so mainly I was riding in wales, lovely week off work!) and Monday started the crazy London riding for my commute and OMG its insane.
Got your organ donor card :D
Tis a nice looking bike, congrats on passing your test too
The thread title is kinda funny, but its not so far from the truth - scary things bikes.
as much as Id love one (the whole man/machine thing must be amazing on them) I dont think ill ever get one.. sports cars will be the closest I get to such thrills.. (or my racer pedal bike  - LOVE throwing it through chicanes in the local villagey / town sort of place. really small tight, windy streets with 20 limits, you can cycle way faster than the cars drive  so much fun )
I couldnt trust myself not to open it up once in a while (read: every empty bit of road) its all too easy, and the sheer pace of those things is astonishing.
but anyways, Im sure yll have a whole lot of fun - looks like a nice bike :) good colour! 650cc I take it?
A good bike is a thing of beauty, Id love one but my mum would never speak to me again.
nice looking bike (tho i know nothing about them tbh)
tho watch out for guys in transit vans pulling out of junctions tho....
congrats dooms, hope you and the sv have many miles of fun :D
just dont do what i did a fornight ago,
go chasing someone on a track day and come off at 90 mph :whoops:
good gear saved me from serious injury, came away with a sprain / torn ligament in my ankle / foot even after sumersaulting in the gravel trap.
if youve not already got some good supporting boots (have a look at sidi vertebras) then id get some, save me from a breakage twice already i reckon over the years.
that and some gloves that you cant pull straight off without undoing the velcro, nearly came acropper with some i was wearing and woulda ended up with some nasty road rash .
last bit of lecture i promise :D, dont go out without your bike clobber on (dont be tempted wearing jeans) as it makes me cringe and shout twat whenever i see someone not in their gear.
Rather it be a cows hide taking the brunt of the roadrash than my hide. :P
Take it easy and overall, get used to riding
SV?
Nice ride :D

Yes it is very very tempting and you cant help but do it when on the straights with nothing infront.
It is such a good feeling being on a bike and now I have a viable escape from London on weekends :D

Not going to be doing a track day for awhile, tho i do have a bikesafe day (quite the opposite of a track day) booked on Sunday :)
I have most my kit, decent jacket & gloves (which you can pull off without undoing but im pretty sure that would pull out the lining), Shoei XR1000, at the moment sorry but im using Jeans and DMs untill payday on monday when ill be buying a coulpe pairs of draggin jeans and a decent pair of textiles, plus a knox back protector.
I wear all the kit I have always (which has been way too hot resently).
:D
looks cool! out of curiousity how much did it cost for you to learn?
i went to a bike school today and asked about learning and it came to a total of somthing crazy like Ã,£600~
sounds about right if thats including cbt and full test tuition
Quote from: madmaxsounds about right if thats including cbt and full test tuition
yeah iirc it was:
cbt
day tuition on 125
2 day tuition on 500
theory test
2hour lesson before main test
main test
somthing like that, i can see how it costs so much alot of time and effort in that lot. but still alot of money on a seasonal hobby :p
all the gear aint cheap either.
A guy I worked with had a Ninja something.. superbike thing - said hed seen 170+mph on the speedo  and it could do a bit over 70mph in 1st
and he had came off plenty of times during his biking (been doing it for decades) and he said all his leathers and that was over Ã,£1k - last time he had it paid for because he was not @ fault, but the person that pulled out on him. so their insurance company paid for it.
essential though, it helps save your life!
Nice bike, Id ride one. Muchly too powerful for a beginner, though. 650s these days are little monsters. Id have recommended something 250-400cc.
Be careful, that thing is faster than 99% of the cars on the road. 0-60 in 3.6s! If I was your daddy, Id install a restrictor in the middle of the night.
definatly worth getting good gear, bikes can be mended or replaced but you cant easily, might post some pics of my one piecer i came off in later.
my cbr600 says 70 off the limiter in first and it tops out at 165ish
most litre sports bikes can do 100 in first
and yes, dont kid yourself about not falling off, ive fallen off a few times, usually when concentration is slipping or getting tired (or once trying to get knee down on a diesel coated roundabout :whoops:).
just hope theyre all low or no speed drops as at least they tend to damage your ego only (yes ive been humbled a fair few times, damn these short legs  ) and not your wallet :)
A mate of mine came off in spring on his radian 600.
Did it at about 30mph going around a bend and already braking, ended up on tree crap and back went from underhim. Went down.. bike flipped over and he went with landing on otherside, then slid to stop after finally getting bike away from him.
Tore through his leathers, his gloves and crushed his left knee cap. Spent 5 or so weeks unable to drive, or place too much pressure on his one leg.
Sooo dangerous, but its doing my head in, I wanted to do my CBT and stuff last summer, I remember posting it on here even. Damn things... just keep putting the damn thing off.
Thats a good machine for starting off on - neat handling and not too powerful, but has enough poke to get you out of trouble.
I have a zx-10 that I still havent managed to sell (Or bring myself to) - I spend more time on the RD350s the RG500 than anything else - you cant beat 2 stroke imo - anything more than 2 strokes is masturbation :)
cept they smell funny
I think thats the main thing about bikes..
its not an if, its a when.
with regards to crashing...
where-as some people never crash a car :) certainly doesnt seem to happen as often.
still...... ;) I really *really* really[/u] like the YZF-R6 although it is not a beginners bike.
tis just the thought of winding something up to 16000+ rpm and slamming it all the way through its gears ..... its not so far away from your own F1 engine - minus about 99% of the cost ;) the noise is FANTASTIC.
:edit:
I bought this (http://www.touristtrophy.com/) to hopefully defer the buying of a real one....
best not tell you its nowt like the true sensation of getting a series of corners just right on a real bike then (oops  )
some photos of me tom foolary

no doubt in my mind that the gear saved me from serious injury
Quote from: madmaxcept they smell funny
there is *nothing* like the smell of 2 stroke. Proper 2 stroke and burning cluches - not those dreadful scooter things.
Im talking about 20 year old bikes that in standard form and with 500cc that can STILL out accelerate ANY modern litre superbike. Class !
Max, are track falls easier on your body? :)
Seems to me that sliding on grass doesnt seem as nasty as sliding down a tarmaced road :D
Spesh after seeing my mates leathers, his were torn through in sections (definately saved his skin mind!) after sliding along a country lane. Yours seem fairly intact just a little scuffed and muddied.
Ive owned a smattering of bikes over the last ten years, and have never had a single accident. Not even tipped over while parking. Its possible to stay safe if you set your mind to it.
Quote from: madmaxbest not tell you its nowt like the true sensation of getting a series of corners just right on a real bike then (oops  )
Indeed, I bet it feels great.
its probably better on a motorbike, but on my racer I love nothing more than the sensation of the weight-transfer.
That amazing feeling you get when leaning hard round a left, and then switching real hard to the right
fantastic feeling :D
M3ta.. I imagine it depends. Max said he ended up in a gravel trap which I suppose is preferable to a ditch.. but if you end up on armco, your not going to enjoy it much.
Madmax, how does your poor bike look :( you see
so many with the sanded-down, fillered & awaiting painting look at the local bike show near the tail end, where they have had serious scratching!!
I am kinda lucky living so close to Poole Quay - every tuesday is bikers night and theres a huge gathering there, usually. some fine machinery :D
pics from it:

was only sliding on the track a few meters at most then it was time to sumersault (!!!) through the gravel trap.

no idea, it was a hire bike so i was grateful that it wasnt mine.
only cost Ã,£135 fortunatly for him to repair so was bareable.
i was in the back of an ambulance and didnt see what state it was in (was lying in the gravel trap when i got up)
 thats the way to do it huh, dont take your own machinery to the track !!!
Well guys, it happened sooner than later.
Today I went on a bikesafe day, was a good days riding (just me a the policeman) and he gave me lots and lots of helpful info, for Ã,£30 i would recommend it.
Anyway... to the crash. I was coming down the road and there was a nice left hand bend which i went round at about 20mph, it suddenly tightened which normally would be fine but there was lots of spilt grain on the other side of the road. Becuase i was spending too much time thing "oh crap, look at that" I went wide, hit the grain and bam, bike went from under me.
Slid across the road and into the grass verge and then the policeman came round the corner, stopped in the road ahead of me with his lights going and came to see if i was alright by which point I was already on my feet looking around.
Im fine, jacket did its job, couple small holes through the textile on the shoulders and scuffs down the left arm. Gloves have some scuffs.
The bike... Well the R&G crash bung (the new type) just snapped off soon as i hit the ground (which im pretty sure they arnt ment to do... esp at 15mph) I have some small scuffs on the front fender and side of the radiator, tank has small dent in it ( and the gear selector snapped off :(
Police got me to call my breakdown service and got the bike picked up and just now dropped off at home. Apart from the cosmetic dmg (no paint has been taken off) and the gear selector it all seems fine. May use it to go get a new one tomorrow after work by sticking it in 2nd and staying in it.
Did find it amusing that my first off happened on a police bikesafe day :)
I will post some of the bike and my kit tomorrow once i get my camera back.

Sorry about the quality, my camera is in my tank bag which is still with the police, I had to use a mates crap camera but you get the idea.

Did your helmet touch the ground at ALL ?
If so, replace it asap. You should NEVER re-use a helmet thats hit the floor - even if you drop it - I know that sounds stupid, but its safe.
Yep know all about replace helmet, luckly it didnt touch anything , had my head up looking where i was sliding to and it was over in a few seconds
Dooms, its good to see youre ok.
1st time I had a go on a motorbike, I made the mistake of planting my feet, this caused the throttled to be opened so I got pulled along and my right foot went into the back wheel. I was very lucky to only need new trainers :) Note to self, a 250cc trials bike is not the ideal thing to start on.
Jugulator has had problems with his bike this weekend. Hes still trying to find out whats wrong with it.
Cheers :)
lol, sounds like fun. Im sure it would be great to start on but given some help with it not just jump on and off we go :P
Im going to try and get hold of a new gear assembly over the next couple of days to get me back on the road (or alternativly drill a hole in the gear leaver arm and screw in a bolt as a temp messure)
Also need to contact R&G becuase their crash bung did exactly what it said it wont... it snapped off as soon as it hit the ground and that was only at 15mph. If it had snapped off and i was going faster and dragging longer i dred to think what the dmg would be to the frame / bike.
damn dooms i was hoping you wouldnt come off this soon.
sorry to see youve damaged your bike, hope it doesnt take much work to get it back to 100%, looks like it came away well even if the bung did snap off .
im glad it was a low speed lowside for your first one though, you at least had time to react properly to it.
yeah id deffo get onto R&G, the crashes ive had on the 250 hornet bent the bolt properly, shame the mounts on the 250s engine had cracked, the next two offs snapped the lug off the engine instead as it was weaker.
Defintaly experiance :)
Police dropped my stuff at my house today while i was at work... they even gave me all the policesafe stuff including the certificate... heh got it even tho i never finished :D
Urrrm.... It happened again.
Stupid girt / stones / crap all over one side of a roundabout. Only going 10mph. Nevermind.
Smashed my front left indercator. Dads pointed out that Ive come off more in a month that he has in 4 years... I had to point out ive done more miles in a month than hes done in 6 years :P

A lot of bikers accidents are happening to older men who return to using a bike in their 40s and dont realise the radical increase in power that has happened over the last twenty or so years.
TBH having problems with cycling I have been thinking of getting one for myself but it would have to be relatively light.
Doh Dooms :whoops:
how long have you been riding now?
anyone taught you the old "look where you wanna go" trick yet?
your whole body reacts to where your looking and the bike follows :-)
so dont go staring at hazards however tempting it is, otherwise youll head straight for them.
always look primarily at where you wanna go and just be aware of the hazards.
but seriously my first major (Ã,£Ã,£ wise) off was on loose grit in the road and that was at 30 ish  so i can entirely sympathise with how easy it is.
infact on grass or gravel i get really cagey when riding on it still.
600s arent what id call new rider friendly, as maximus mentioned earlier 250 - 400 ccs are great to get started on,
its a shame they dont seem to do those sort of sizes over here at all officially in attractive packages like they do in japan (cbr250, bandit 400 etc etc)
going on what serious quoted,
when i had my trackday off, my uncle fetched my bike for me the following weekend.
the difference between his 10 - 12 year old CB650 and my cbr600 ?
about double the power (50bhp to 100bhp)... which is silly silly and goes a long way to explaining some of the born again biker accidents.
