Great, become a brand whore.  What you buying next, ferrari aftershave?

You can undoubtedly get more for your money by buying a bike from a bike company, and you wouldnt look like you won it in a raffle.

Crap spec for Ã,£500...

Only specs I recognise are the rims and tires. Alex DM18s are fine and strong for cross country, and Maxxis tires are the "upscale" brand for OEM maker Cheng Chin out of Taiwan. Nut wrong with them, but they are rather inexpensive. If I knew what the mech spec was, it might make sense--they could have popped their nut on those things and stayed cheap on the wheels, which again, are basic, but not bad tall. Likely though, its just a run of the mill Taiwanese bike with a 100 pound markup due to the Subaru decals.

Best mtb value Ive seen in the UK are those nice On-Ones BBs been gushing about. ;)

FC2K, if you want a more affordable SS, price out a Redline Monocog (http://www.redlinebicycles.com/adultbikes/monocog.html). They should be more affordable.  Ã,£237 retail over here.

The On-One geared bikes dont look like theyre likely the best value in class, but they sure do look nice as well.

While youre at it, pick me up a Pompino, geared 2:1, with Tufo 35mm cxcross tubular-clinchers (http://www.biketiresdirect.com/productdetail.asp?p=TUCDI&tnum=2914573&c=3883838). :D

I dont quite get the bike-rack mentality.

The colour scheme doesnt translate well at all - fugly. Itd be naff on the back of a scooby.

in all seriousness though, SS is the way to go for off roading on the cheap - its simple, so no replacing or repairing pranged mechs etc; light and most off all fun - as youre not mucking about with gears and are just getting on with riding...

Thats the problem. :/ I dont think Redline distributes outside of the US. Shame as they have several bikes that are pure economic genius. Cant wait to get mine, from the first shipment of 2007s to arrive in the country. My bikes likely somewhere in Utah now, making its way across the country.

Hmm, I think Ill contact them and ask.

EDIT: no contact info, Ill have to fish on Usenet.

Search shows that Batavus, the Dutch brand, will be distributing Redline BMX bikes on the continent.

Looks like junk to me tbh.
If I were to spend that much on a bike, Id grab a Claud Butler Cape Wrath.

The Subaru or the Redline? The latters only weakness is that its a bit porky at 27#. It can certainly be upgraded as needed. Lots of the bike shop employees around here buy them to ride, as they take a thrashing.

Id buy a "Subaru" bicycle as soon as Id buy the "Cadillac" mtb.

the caddy bike looks like a rocky mountain or similar, i.e. a very nice bike, rebadged... drool. desticker it and id have it in a heart beat.

Anyway, Max = Amish Cyclist :D  Single speed, rod brakes and carthorse wheels, bliss :D

I do own a DL-1, Ill have you know. I only ride it on Sundays when I use the hand crank radio. :D

The Cadillacs spec is less than impressive. Shimano 475 mechanicals on a FS bike? A total joke. Crap wheels--why anybody would want a deep section low spoke count wheel off road beats me.

The Deore LX is fine, but you could get far better spec if you werent paying for the name. Plenty of boxed HT bikes with XT and Avids to be had for $800, and FS for well under 1K.

1. mechanicals discs are becoming more and more common even on some top end bikes... theyre just as good as vs and vs are still sh*t hot.

2. youre not paying for the name - youre paying for the frame and the fork which are decent bits of kit by the look of it, as is most of the bike.

3. crap wheels? ive not damaged many wheels in my time, as i am a very light rider, and if they bend, re-true or upgrade.

Deore mechanicals are absolute crap. Had them on the Brodie. Set up perfectly, which takes forever due to the crap design, they stop almost as good as V-brakes. The Avids are much much better.

Youre paying for the name. Have a look here: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mountain_bikes.htm

And theyre not actually least expensive place around. The "Mercier" and "Motobecane" bike on there come off the same line as Fuji, afaik.

Break one proprietary spoke on those wheels and youll have to wait a month or two to get a replacement. Deep dish rims are also not vertically compliant, so more likely to fail catastrophically. Fine for time trialists, but silly for most.

Ive only busted a couple spokes on 32/36H wheels and cracked an eyelet on a Mavic--but on all occasions I was able to ride home on the wheel, something that cant be said for designer stuff.
