Dont think theres a car I wouldnt consider to a certain extent - If Im going to buy a car to keep for any long period of time I will do exhaustive research to see what the best car I can afford is.  In this case:

Having owned a Daewoo Nexia (mk2 Astra-alike) and a Rover 45 Diesel, I can dispel pretty much anyones bad conceptions about either car, unless its the K-series engine they are against in which case they have my understanding as I would be aprehensive about having one.

I have had no real problem with either car.

However, I have also owned: Mk3 Astra Diesel, and a 406 Diesel as run-arounds.

Both have left me disenchanted to say the least.  There was nothing wrong with the Astra, but it absolutely had nothing to offer over the Daewoo.  Less features, no better to drive, and the interior was far far worse.

The 406 was unreliable, and eventually broke down completely.  It was comfortable enough to drive, but again it really had very little to offer over the Nexia except fuel economy.

Eventually the Nexia needed replacing, and wanting a Diesel I researched long and hard for a reliable, economical, affordable medium sized DERV.  The Rover 45 L series came up with everything I needed at the right price.

Jobs a goodun, Im very pleased with it indeed.

QuoteA volvo, always got the headlights on and on the new ones they are stupidly bright in the day so i hate them.. and i still class them as old mans cars.

Pretty sure on the more modern ones theres a switch under the bonnet you can twist to stop that.  Our R-reg V90 has that facility AFAIK.

If Rovers were good, they wouldnt have gone bust. People would have bought them.

Interesting point actually - I bought my rover 45 as it was good for the money, but obviously the value of rovers has plummeted even more since they went tits up, making them much better value for money these days.

Same with Daewoo, come to think of it

I had an Experro for nearly 3 years, bought it to put me on for 6 months, and because it kept flying through the MOT i kept it until the injector pump died.  The old Deawoos are just old Vauxhalls with slightly different bodies.  Sister had a Nexia through work when she 1st started, and i thought it was actually quite a good car.  The finish on them isnt great, but they arent a bad cheap option.

Serious

If I were to go back driving I wouldnt buy a 4x4, purely environmental issue. I certainly wouldnt need to go cross country and if I needed to carry something big then I can rent or buy a people carrier.

I wouldnt buy any of the main brands either, I would want something at least a bit different. Company cars just put me off.

Low sports cars are difficult for me to get into now so they probably wouldnt be an option either, unfortunately.

So that leaves a Bentley...

Anyone got a £100K to lend me?

MG ZT for example, it doesnt make sense.  Walk around the car, there isnt one body panel that actually matches up properly.  Its all panel over panel.

Dire is being kind.

ive walked around 100s of them, panel gaps are equal all around on 99.9%. the only problem area on some is the front bumper where it meets the wing, but isnt bad at all.

im not going to keep posting like this if you want to beleive what you read from Clarkson or Honest John or other clueless journos then go ahead, enjoy your Renualts.

just noticed this.  Mate bough an x-Reg MGF Brand spanking new.  Hes here because i just built his new PC last night.
On delivery :
Soft top Leaked above the passenger window.
Welds on frame round screen still had rough welds on them, hey hadnt been ground off
A Bubbled rear tyre. (OK not due to Rover mechanicals, but doesnt sound good for their dealer)
Scratches down the drivers door.

In the 1st year he had:
New engine because the con rod showed its face at 3k
then a new Gearbox because the syncromesh died and smashed the guts to pieces. That at about 7000
New engine again at 10k because the service picked up there was a crack in the block that had done about 7000.
Laquer was peelin all over the car, needed a full respray.

2nd Year :
Gearbox again, this time the bearings died.
Electrics kept shorting out the immobiliser and the lights stopped working.
New wheel bearings on front.
Nw Power steering pump.

3rd year :
Rust on the sill.
New engine mountings, 1 had cracked, and another was on its way.

That is just what he can remember.  Hes sure there are some more bits that he has forgotten.

DEViANCE

  that is terrible to be fair, but just sounds like he bought a lemon, you get them with all manufacturers, should have got his money back after the con-rod incident. Although Ive not heard of a K doing that.
