Well, Ive just signed by contract for a summer job, which should be for around 12 weeks.  That means Im catchin paper.

Soooo... I reckon the new bike bugs gonna start biting again, especially as Ill almost certainly be biking to work.

AND a guy in my department has a pompino, which I see every day.
AND pompinos are only Ã,£375 now.

Silly idea?  How much do yall reckon Id get for the yellow bike?  Paints chipped, but Id roughly touch it up.

Get one. Its always nice to have a stupid simple bike that always works.

The $375 doesnt include tires btw. Such a bike demands something bomb proof. I can vouch for the IRC Tandem tire as being stupid strong and my new favorite urban sh*t kicker. Light at 350g, and a "just right" width of 30mm. Not a single flat all winter. Works fine off road too, if its not too muddy. Schwalbe Marathon 28mm is another good un, but will add half a kg compared to the irc. Hutchinson makes the Acrobat, which is one of the few cross tires thats not too annoying on pave. Panaracer Pasela Tourguards are as light as the IRCs and probably easier to find over there.

I may have to give the Redline a toss about on the local fire roads this afternoon.

How much for the yeller bike? Whatever your particular market asks. Far less than the effort you put into it.  I wouldnt sell it, tbh. Whats wrong with it other than you having new bike lust?

funkychicken9000

Id slap cheapie vittorias on the pompino if I got it, 23mm or less.  Theres 25mms on the yellow bike and they dont grip any more than the 23mms on my ribble.

As for whats wrong with the yellow one, I want to go fixed.  That means a new hub, spokes and rim, possibly bending the frame back to 120mm, and more time and effort.  Also I dont fully trust the wheel not to slip at the moment; if I was relying on it to stop too then Id be pooping myself.  I reckon it would cost me Ã,£70ish + time to build a fixed back wheel for it, and its worth maybe Ã,£100.  So if I bin that idea and flog it, that means a pomp is only Ã,£200 away, which is 3 days wages :D

Its not about grip, its about float, silly man. :P Anything less than 28mm on a cxcrosser is scandalous. My 30mm jobbers only weigh 20g more than 25mm Victoria Zaffiros (which I like, but in the 28mm version) but I can run them at 80 psi and jump curbs. :D :w00t: The Trusty Aerospace Viscount, now with crunchy bottom bracket (tm), does rock your garden variety 23s.

Sell the dang thing and get your Pompino on. You know ya wanna.

Are you gonna go old skool with clips and straps on it or stick to spd?

funkychicken9000

Agh, dont tempt me!

My fingers flitting over the order button.  Think Ill spy out the guy in my department who has one tomorrow and check if a medium will do me.

And yes, SPD all the way.  Although I havent put the shoes on since I got them shin-deep in mud last week; my mate got a puncture on that 105d peugeot so we trekked a couple of miles through fields carrying our bikes as a shortcut.  Bad move man, bad move.

maximusotter

TBH, if I was getting that Pompino and had an alternate daily rider, Id go knobbies and embrace the mud. Youd probably want to gear it down, though. I do my local trails with a road gear every now and again. Makes you look all veiny.

See if you can test ride your work mates. As always, make your considerations more about top tube length than crotch clearance.

On-One are ace,

Hmmm, I have a problem.  Not sure which size i need, which is making the decision as to whether I buy one or not irrelevent.

Me = 6ft, with a rather large 35.5" inseam.

My Ribble is a 54cm ctc, horizontal top tube.  They have quite long top tubes hence the relatively small size (due to my shorter upper body), and with a 110mm stem, reaching the hoods is still a little bit of a stretch.

They say for the pomp you take 3cm off your normal bike size due to the sloping tt.  Thats 51cm, a medium, which is in stock.  Is this right though?  They specify this:

57cm - XL - from 6 to 64"
54cm - L - from 59 to 61"
51cm - M from 55 to 510"
48cm - from 51" to 56"

Which would put me on a large, out of stock.  What to do?  Argh!

maximusotter

You have a 7005 alu Rib right? Its got a 57cm top tube, so youre either a L Pompino with a 55.5 cm top tube, or an XL with a 57.6cm top tube. If you feel a bit stretched out right now, get the L. The M is just going to need way way way too much post.

Which means that you get nada, as they dont have any left in your size.  :whoops:

The 51 is a full three cms smaller than your current ride. MAYBE it could work, if youre REALLY stretched out now, but thats a mighty small frame for your size. If you really are all leg...maybe, youll be miserably hunched over, though, so might want a new stem.

I ride a similar sloping tube fix at your height--its got a 60cm virtual top tube, and fits just right. Mind, Ive only got a 34" inseam, but still

funkychicken9000

Arrrrr, right you are.

Ill drop brant an email, see when theyre getting some more in.

maximusotter

Yeah, Id rather you be on an L or even XL and dial in the fit with a proper stem if needed. How does your reach feel now? The M might be possible if youre proportioned a bit wierd. Seat tube length is going to look goofy, and you might need a stem extender--but if youre *very* short waisted, it could work.

Its like the numbnuts that insisted on fitting my fixie, who insisted that I was a 55cm, due to my shortish legs, and then came out with the exact numbers I told him: if a bike has a  60cm virtual top tube--it fits me. what a dumbass. :P

If I was getting a Pompino, Id get the XL, due to my long torso, even though I have shorter legs than you. Funny how that works. :P

funkychicken9000

I think L it is.

Gah, Im at that stage now where Ive spent far too long thinking about getting a pomp.  Its now impossible to turn back, its merely a case of how long I can hold off :D

Wheres badabing these days?  I want to hear how hes finding his

maximusotter

If you were in the US, Id rib you to get a Redline like mine, only 259GBP with todays exchange rate. Pretty much identical quality spec, with perhaps the Pompino having better Q bars and a fancier wishbone frame, albeit in likely the same steel, and my bike having a nicer crankset and stock mudguards.

Badabing got a Pompino finally? I know hes got an On-One niner and adores it.

Everybody needs a fixie in their stable--though if the hubs got enough threads, Id pick the fixed cog I liked most and put a freewheel with one tooth smaller on the other side. Im back on fixed gear, but its nice to ride a dirt simple one speed coastable bike sometimes. The cheap ACS bmx freewheels are just fine if you drip some lube in. Mine sounded nasty at first, now it just purrs. Half the price of Shimano, and more pawls, thus faster engagement.
