Quote from: Deaths HeadI read a rather good explanation of how the scratch happens.  player bangs something, despite beign scross room the 360 shakes slightly causing the very fast spinning disc to wobble and get scratched.  However, the scratch will only be long after the bang that caused it sinec it will be some time before the laser tries to read the damaged part of the disc or the user takes it out and wonders how their disc was damaged.

The discs are damaged by the laser head which is why its always scratched in a different area to where the lens is currently reading.

Actually, found the link after 2 seconds looking.  http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EkpEluEFuyGnAwYfVT.php

id buy into that explination sounds about right to me ... but if thats so MS ovoiusly made a bad design and didnt test it properly before hand ... i mean they spend loads on marketing and figuring out there target market .. but they dont design it around them? hows that work ... there target market is, i assume gonna be young people, which are gonna jump around a bit more  .... who tested the consoles? OAPs .. no offence to OAPs

They were in such a rush to get the 360 out that they did not have time to properly check these things.  Just look at the inadequate cooling on the gfx chip.

think its a case of going to the lowest bidder ... and theyve tryed to save ££ on building them and testing

look at how much jumping about you do playing wii boxing? that doesnt scratch the disk...

im guessing its down to the cheapest drive in the xbox and one of a better quality in the wii then?

Quote from: weazelit  used to scratch them in the middle of the disks generally ... that wouldnt make sense if it was wobble ... it would be at the edge .. used to make really clear rings ... even so u would have thought they would have sorted it out by now
nope - its not wobble having the edges of the disc touch the tray - its the wobble causing the disc to touch the lens support.  That can be anywhere on the disc :)

Not likely - the most likely reason was they simply didnt consider that type of motion when they designed it.  It was actually one of the CD drive suppliers who was at fault not really Microsoft.  Out of all the things to design and test in a cutting edge hardware platform I could imagine that vibration testing on wooden floorboards during game play on every supplier of CD drive was not their highest priority and they simply missed it.

Theyll have developed it in a concrete floored building so it probably never showed until they went live.  Didnt they do free fixes/cloth kits and replacement discs a while back or did I imagine that?

It was just a silly mistake.  They happen.

Well the wii doesnt have that one brand of cd drive so it should be unaffected.  If the drive had the felt/stoppers around the lens then theyd have been fine.  Not all xboxes have that cd drive in so not all have the problem.  (Which is why Im suprized a new xbox from a shop has the issue).

The wii was released after the xbox came out so itll have been tested for before hitting the shelves.

They didnt test bridges for people walking in sync.  The millenium bridge shook itslef crazy.  Now all bridges are tested that way.  This is the equivalent for games consoles.

that may be true but if u look back at the ps1 they had loads of play in the mechanisum, they knew the consoles are gonna get thrown about ... and designed accordingly .. its not like its really a new problem that has arrised ... measures could have been made along time ago

i see what your saying with bridges ... learn from ur mistakes .... but prevention measures have been used along time before the 360 there shouldnt have been this issue

I dont know what all the fuss is about. My 360 sits on a really wobbly shelf and has never marked any disks. How much abuse are you people giving a running console for gods sake?
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

if u have one of the bad drives in the 360 u dont have to do anything they just scratch them
