Title: 360 hardware/connection (sound) question
Post by: zpyder on March 24, 2010, 12:11:14 PM
Ive been meaning to get my own 360 for a while now that I could use in my room on my 24" monitor, as the TV in the games room downstairs is so old it literally is impossible to read any text in Mass Effect 2.

Our xbox is also first gen, its RRODd and been repaired once, but has no HDMI ports etc on the back.

My monitor is the dell S2409W, which has dvi and hdmi ports on the back. Obviously the dvi is connected to my PC, and so I am thinking of getting an Elite or similar and connecting it via HDMI.

However as Ive only ever messed around with our first gen xbox, I have no idea what ports and connections are on the 360 elite or whatever is recommended. the HDMI on the monitor only takes video I think, and so I need to sort out something for the sound.

Ideally I need to be able to connect my speakers to it as well as headphones (can plug them into the speakers) fairly easily, are there audio outs on the 360, or am I going to need to mess around with adapters etc? The speakers Id like to use are 5.1 Logitech jobbies...

Aye, thats what I am using on the HD TV downstairs on the rare occasions my dad isnt watching some antiques program ><

Problem is, I am wanting to connect it to my computer monitor and speakers. Monitor = DVI, VGA, or HDMI input. Speakers = L, R and Centre/sub connectors...?It must have been done before.

Ive used composite, VGA, SCART, RGB on the 1st gen and nothing seems to beat VGA (Red & White audio split off it).

As for the HDMI on the elites Im not sure where you can get the audio from, need either the cable to split or something like digital / optical out on the back of the elite. dont know what the options are sorry :(

I guess I could use one of these jobbies:

And some male/female converters for the Red/White audio leads and plug my speakers into those?

the offical HDMI cable comes with extra outputs for audio so would prob be your best bet.

Not sure if its the same cable that comes with new Elites?

But do the extra outputs include analogue? It looked like it was some fancy kind of output on those images?

Yep is L & R Analogue, the two gold things sticking out, just normal audio sockets, for plugs like on the VGA version.

There will also be a optical connector.

I think my elite came with this cable.

I assume the VGA cable can be used on older XBoxes, the HDMI only on the ones with HDMI obvioulsy
