For some reason, I never listened to "Unchained" from the American Series that much when it came out, preferring the more artsy releases of the series with spare acoustic instrumentals.

Well, that was stupid. Unchained may be my favorite modern JC record now that Ive had a good listen after a several year hiatus. It doesnt try to make this holy Cash-as-god music. Nah, with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers backing him, it just rocks.

Best of all, it won country album of the year, despite being ignored by country radio in lieu of prettier artists. The "thank you" ad Cash put in Billboard magazine after the grammys is classic.

This may be a better place for new fans to start than an older greatest hits. Its fresher and makes you appreciate him as an artist, not just a legend.
