Title: 4.1GHz from a Pentium D 805 Dual Core for £75!
Post by: Deaths Head on June 11, 2006, 13:00:56 PM
http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores_uk/index.html

A very interesting read.  Thats alot of bang for your money.  I am seriously tempted by this since I do alot of xvid encoding, dual core and high clock speed with an Intel cpu would be alot better than my current system (A64 3200+ skt 754).

The cheapest I have found the cpu for is Ã,£81inc VAT at http://www.aria.co.uk
The cheapest I have found the motherboard they used is Ã,£112 inc VAT from http://www.microdirect.co.uk

Just had a look at how much memory is... Ã,£200!  Feck.

What do people think?

Looks like a stonking chip, but Id wait for more results before splashing out on the kit. Ã,£400 + watercooling is a fair chunk of cash.

Apaprently this motherboard also supports the 805 cpu, and its only Ã,£34.. AGP and DDR.

Apparently the Asrock 775i65G may be a good match up with this cpu.  These processors are fsb limited so going with DDR over DDR2 is not going to hurt you too much.  Someone with both configurations claims only a 1~% difference in scores.  If you can find rev 2 pcb then you get a board which is future proof, it will be compatible with Conroe...

150W of heat to shift at 4.1GHz? No thanks :)

As for memory, its just your bog standard DDR2. PC2 4200 would be adequate and goes for Ã,£160 for 2x1GB at Crucial. Not that much more than PC3200 DDR from the same place.

I dont think 4.1GHz is a realistic proposition for people.  I did read one review of this processor, they had the motherboard sitting on the antistatic foam that came with it and the board melted through the foam.  :)

It might be OK if you get enough water cooling going with the radiators outside the room.

Ive got to be looking at a similar heat output from my dualie and my Abyss rad rarely breaks a sweat. Might need something quite special in the waterblock department though.

looks like Overclocking might be about to make a comeback, and I may be going Intel for the first time since my 486.

Ive grown out of overclocking.  All the watercooling in the world cant stop it heating your room up silly amounts, and in this weather Id rather be running a f***ing epia.

I posted about this a few weeks ago before purchasing one and I got no replies in the thread !

What thread?  And how did you get on with it?  What did you get? ie cpu/motherboard/etc.

Ah, this thread.  http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/1769.page
You didnt go into much detail, did you? :)

DAMN YOU!!!1

I have now bought my first Intel chip, Ive had AMD "since I were a lad" well, since the K5-75mhz days, through AMD K6-2 to Slot A Athlon, Socket A then 754.... but thats all gone to hell.

I will be ditching my Sempron 2800+ 64bit for this Pentium D 805 Dual-core.

It is just too good value to ignore. I fully intend to crank it up a few notches, maybe not to 4.1, but somewhere between the two.

I might even get some games that my current kit cannot seem to handle, well see.

Again, Damn you you guys, damn Tomshardware and everyone else, you have made a loyal AMD guy turn to the darkside.

Cheers
Tongy

lol to be honest AMD was popular due to the tiny tiny prices of their chips in comparison to intel gear. But now with the dual core AMD, and the 64Bit AMD chips around the intel prices and no faster than a normal athlon xp (really... as dual core means naff all to games, and 64bit is in the same regard unless there is a special release out for it).

Intel chips offer higher clockspeeds, and are now the overclocking kings, and most importantly are cheaper than the bloody expensive AMD affairs.

Completely failed to follow this thread :)

Mines sitting at 3.66 odd - its been on the trip to 4 and its relatively easy to get there - was only there for 30 minutes though - my cooler only does 150W

What motherboard have you got it on?

Ive gone for an ASUS P5SD2-X myself, as I still have an AGP vga card I want to keep.

Seems like a good board and I like ASUS kit, so I hope it goes well, just need to find a decent cooler, the Freezer 7 seems like the front runner at the moment.

I hope this lives upto its reputation regarding performance.

Open the window and stick the radiators outside :D

Its how I used to do it on hot days ;)

I run it on an Asus P5WD2-E board myself. Its not my main pc - more an experiment!

Now that is a nice board, about 130 quid.

I will try it out as ASUS are the best at the moment. I have my Sempron on a K8U-X and its pretty good, bit slow but got some good features.

Cheers

That board is only Ã,£30 now and you reckon its up to the job? Cant seem to find any reviews of it in action

i dont want heavy overclocking just about 3ghz, no point in getting a super duper board as after all this is a budget project

A quick question as this is a bit over my head...

If I run PC3200 (DDR400) RAM and shove the FSB to 200 will I be ok or will I be causing a bottleneck ?

Im seriously consider this as an upgrade path but I want to minimise my outlay, so new RAM is out of the question (for now)...

Not really, youre running the RAM at 200MHz and the CPU bus is going at 200MHz. If the RAM was slower than the FSB then yes, bottleneck ahoy. However it isnt so youre fine.

Cheers, thats what I thought but I started to convince myself otherwise after reading way too much about OCing the chip with FSB and multiplers :)

lol, Im such a nub OCer ;)

What HSF are you using (or are you WC) and what sort of temps are you hitting ?

Ill be quite happy to just push it upto 3ghz if I can keep it on a stock HSF :)

After a bit of running in where high(ish) temperatures of around 58-60 degrees were reached, I am not running at low 50s @ 3.8GHz on an Arctic cooling freezer pro 7 HSF under running load (Eg watching HDTV, running superPI etc etc)

Cheers m8 :)

Ill see what I can get out of it on the stock HSF then, I dont really want to have to install a cyclone in there to keep it cool :)

That freezer 7, imo is pretty quiet.

However, I do have a 3550, a 3600 and an asterisk box running underneath it 24/7..

I have the equivalent HSF on my Athlon64, I can attest to it being very quiet and very good at cooling.
