A very interesting read.  Thats alot of bang for your money.  I am seriously tempted by this since I do alot of xvid encoding, dual core and high clock speed with an Intel cpu would be alot better than my current system (A64 3200+ skt 754).

The cheapest I have found the cpu for is Ã,£81inc VAT at http://www.aria.co.uk
The cheapest I have found the motherboard they used is Ã,£112 inc VAT from http://www.microdirect.co.uk

Just had a look at how much memory is... Ã,£200!  Feck.

What do people think?

Pete

Looks like a stonking chip, but Id wait for more results before splashing out on the kit. Ã,£400 + watercooling is a fair chunk of cash.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Apparently the Asrock 775i65G may be a good match up with this cpu.  These processors are fsb limited so going with DDR over DDR2 is not going to hurt you too much.  Someone with both configurations claims only a 1~% difference in scores.  If you can find rev 2 pcb then you get a board which is future proof, it will be compatible with Conroe...

150W of heat to shift at 4.1GHz? No thanks :)

As for memory, its just your bog standard DDR2. PC2 4200 would be adequate and goes for Ã,£160 for 2x1GB at Crucial. Not that much more than PC3200 DDR from the same place.

I dont think 4.1GHz is a realistic proposition for people.  I did read one review of this processor, they had the motherboard sitting on the antistatic foam that came with it and the board melted through the foam.  :)

Serious

It might be OK if you get enough water cooling going with the radiators outside the room.

Mongoose

Ive got to be looking at a similar heat output from my dualie and my Abyss rad rarely breaks a sweat. Might need something quite special in the waterblock department though.

looks like Overclocking might be about to make a comeback, and I may be going Intel for the first time since my 486.

funkychicken9000

Ive grown out of overclocking.  All the watercooling in the world cant stop it heating your room up silly amounts, and in this weather Id rather be running a f***ing epia.

I posted about this a few weeks ago before purchasing one and I got no replies in the thread !

What thread?  And how did you get on with it?  What did you get? ie cpu/motherboard/etc.

Ah, this thread.  http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/1769.page
You didnt go into much detail, did you? :)

how did you get on?

DAMN YOU!!!1

I have now bought my first Intel chip, Ive had AMD "since I were a lad" well, since the K5-75mhz days, through AMD K6-2 to Slot A Athlon, Socket A then 754.... but thats all gone to hell.

I will be ditching my Sempron 2800+ 64bit for this Pentium D 805 Dual-core.

It is just too good value to ignore. I fully intend to crank it up a few notches, maybe not to 4.1, but somewhere between the two.

I might even get some games that my current kit cannot seem to handle, well see.

Again, Damn you you guys, damn Tomshardware and everyone else, you have made a loyal AMD guy turn to the darkside.

Cheers

lol to be honest AMD was popular due to the tiny tiny prices of their chips in comparison to intel gear. But now with the dual core AMD, and the 64Bit AMD chips around the intel prices and no faster than a normal athlon xp (really... as dual core means naff all to games, and 64bit is in the same regard unless there is a special release out for it).

Intel chips offer higher clockspeeds, and are now the overclocking kings, and most importantly are cheaper than the bloody expensive AMD affairs.
