Title: AC - DC to power car amp + speakers and subwoofer
Post by: joecroxon on April 29, 2008, 01:17:44 AM
OK guys after lukin at a few posts on tinternet aparently you can use PC power supply to run small amps (arround 300w)
I am looking to power my 1600w amp and if possible my 1200w amp aswell from a standard 240v AC wall plug, the 1200w is wired up to two subs and draws
about 30amps. what possible solutions do i have available?

probably the best idea is to ask someone at Maplins, they have a range of PSU kits available and might be able to offer some advice on it.

Havent you been a member before or was that someone else?

Welcome to posting if you are new, welcome back if you have been before ;)

You can use a pc PSU to power a car amp. just like what i did, see pix.the psu in the pix has 18 amperes in the 12 volt line. You can also parallel 2 psu to get more current. The amp. in the pix is a 1000watts unit and the psu has no trouble powering it up although if you try to crack it up all the way the psu will choke up and the amp. will enter into protect mode as the psu  will not be able to supply the required current. Some tagan single rail psu has as much as 34 amperes in the 12v line if you can get hold of these it will be perfect for your needs.2 q-tec 650watts psu in parallel will also do the job and is much cheaper than the tagan. One of the drawback of this is that you will not be able to get the max power output of the amp. cause you will need at least 13.8v to 14volt dc but it is very cost effective this way.

Can I ask the purpose of all this unless you already happen to have the equipment lying around? Is it for some kind of project? Im intrigued. :)

im off to uni in october and im not alloud to take my car with me, dont wana sell my sound system out of my car and seems a waste to be sitting in my car at home doin nothing, just wanted to know how much it would cost to run it all of 240v ac as appose to from car battery.
cheers for the advice guys, runnin in parallel seems the best looking solution.
