Depends what you define as classic.

On the basis of old classics, go back far enough to films like Ben Hur with big names like Charlton Heston and you get dozens of names and films appearing, etc.

If you look recently theres bugger all to go by and most popular actors havnt made enough memorable films, or there arnt enough genre specific actors or enough contemporary classics to go by. Going by genre for instance Id say Arnie obviously has the winning catalogue of action classics with Total Recall, Commando, Predator, The Running Man, Terminator 1/2, Red Heat, etc.

Comedy classics? Leslie Nielsen

Red Heat and Running man are not classics at all. Even total recall is pushing it.

A very good film a classic does not make.

Yeah right. Five Easy Pieces is likely the best American film of the early 70s. I think its the best of that decade by far, and a lot of critics agree with me. I dont really care how many people have seen it, though in the US most have, as a restored version airs quite often on basic cable TV.

Prizzis Honor is not only a classic, but a John Huston film. All his films are classics. Period.

Terms of Endearment is the winner of several Academy awards, including "best picture". Good pic, despite the creepiness of Shirley McClaine.

Least you could do is define what makes a film a classic in your eyes so everyone understands what you mean.

Yes I even said that when I posted. State what a classic is then we can weigh it up.

A classic is an item that has become a ubiquitous and unique symbol or icon of a time gone by, mainly because of its inherent quality or its representative status.

Exactly, it has to pass the test of time so anything under 30 years old doesnt count.

Anyone remember Buster Keaton? How about Alec Guiness? Most would know Clint Eastwood for his every which way films and westerns but are they truly classics?

Point being a classic for one person might not be a classic for someone else and in this case we need to know what Sam thinks makes a film a classic.

Alec Guiness

A passage to India
Star wars IV, V, VI
Doctor Zhivago
Lawrence of Arabia
H.M.S. Defiant
The Scapegoat
Bridge on the river Kwai
Man in the white suit
Lavender hill mob

Bogus. Even something like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, though not highbrow, is a classic in the surfer/stoner genre.

Is it? to who? Ive never seen it. You have already limited it by shoving it into a genre so I dont think it counts as more than a cult film.

I dont believe *instant* classics like The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy should be counted yet either.

de niro:

Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
The Deer Hunter
The Untouchables
Goodfellas
Casino
Sleepers
Ronin
Godfather part 2

and not sure if this should count as a classic but it is one of my favorite movies: A bronx tale

Also agree with max - a film doesnt have to be 30 years old to be a classic

The only films peter jackson should have ever made are Brain Dead and Bad Taste.  The rest are boring and pointlessly long.  Its for Games Workshop people, Ooh Ooh, Orks and stuff mystical battles and other dull stuff.

Hes even got a hand in the new Halo movie, which we all know is going to be bad but because its a Peter Jackson film, its going to be at least four hours of solid boredom.

exactly - which is why your whole "anything under 30 years old doesnt count. " shouldnt really be a hard and fast rule

the back to the future trillogy are arguably classic films

as are the original three star wars films

none of which are more than 30 years old (OK the original starwars is 29 years old but point still stands)

though in principle I do agree with the overall point you are making as far as  very recently released films are concerned
