My desire at the moment seems to be prompting the following:

"Google talk authentication failed to login. If this is a google apps account confirm that chat service is enabled for this account".

Considering AFAIK nothing has changed, what does this mean? It appears I can no longer download apps off of the marketplace.

Had the same thing at the weekend. Log into gmail and activate your account change from a @googlemail.com account to a gmail.com account. Looks like google has finally forced the gmail.com for android but not on gmail itself.

Works better if you factory reset your phone and change your account to @gmail instead of @googlemail.com :)

If however you are getting this message whilst trying to get an app, some threads on the android forums state that if you login to gtalk first then use the marketplace it should auth. Didnt work for me however, hence the change to a gmail.com account.

Thats the thing...my google account IS a gmail account, always has been!

Might be worth a try loging into gtalk from your phone and leaving it connected whilst you use the marketplace. This bug looks like its been around for 2 years or there abouts but no answer from the Google staff on the forums.

Out of interest when you try to get the app do you get the message saying its trying to "Authorize Download" and this is when it spits the error message about the service?

Just starting download...and doesnt do anything else...too late, factory resetted :D Note to self...a backup app might be handy...would have got one if Id been able to download one!

Luckily the HTC droid comes with a backup feature so I got around that issue when I did the factory reset. Never had the issue on the G1 with 1.6 but this desire in the last 4 months has needed a factory reset twice now.

Still like the Android platform though :)

Google dropped the ball on that one though, the backup feature really hampers phone performance.

You can get Titanium Backup for free on Xda-Developers, or pay for sprite backup from the market place, and save to the SD and the Drop Box you should have set up :D
