A close relative dropped by, seems their computer had come up with a virus report asking for money  ???. Despite me putting AVG and ZoneAlarm on it they failed to update anything and ended up with a System Tool 2011 infection...

Far, far worse it's running Vista...  :gag: :gag: :disappointed: :disappointed:

Unfortunately, as they haven't kept AVG up to date it isn't capable of doing squat.

I've presently put it into safe mode and installed Malwarebytes, seems to have found 19 infected items so hopefully that's it.

Thing is people who don't know and don't have anyone to ask could end up paying the bastard thieving gits or, hopefully, a reputable repair shop to fix the damn thing

Interestingly, these "System Tools" Viruses only affect the user account it came in on.

Log into another account, run a FULL malwarebytes scan and you're laughing.
Fix up the holes using Spybot's Immunisation.

I would have if the thing had another account set up. Couldn't create one so used safe mode instead. Cleaned most of it off then switched to safe mode with networking before updating the malwarebytes and doing another full scan. That got the rest of it.

I then switched to his account and did a third full scan, updated Vista to SP2, and installed all the patches and updates I could find. Installed AVG and did a scan with that, it removed a few damaged files. Finally put on ZoneAlarm and Firefox :)
