Opportunity has arisen at work to take on a project involving ASP development/programming. Potentially I could take it on and get training but as someone whos never delved into programming before is this going to be too much?  I cant figure out if this is an excellent career opportunity or just plain out of my league!

Personally I would have said ASP is a dead end path, if youre really wanting to change direction and get into programming why not learn Java?

Its not really a case of wanting a direction change - its more the opportunity has arisen and I just wanted to find out more about it. I think the idea would be that it would be something I would do in conjunction with my current role (systems admin) rather than to take over from it.

Take it on if there is prospect for .net :)

Java appears to be king in my arena, but thats nothing... theres an awful lot of demand for .net programmers, VB.net and sharepoint guys are in demand for web designer type roles, and c#.net guys for pure programming roles.

the other side of it is, once you get your head around asp, and if you show even the slightest of aptitudes for coding, youll be able to branch out. without knowing the specifics, id say it is definitely worth exp[loring.
