Id import one personally.

Can maybe snap up a ceramic white one and get all the features you want. Although ps2 backwards compatibility would be foreign.

Usually, if you have ps2 games, you have a ps2. Makes sense, really.

I agree, although if I was a PS2 owner looking to upgrade ... I would probably keep a handful of my best PS2 titles and sell the old console/games to use as an offset against the new purchase so the fact its not backward compatible is somewhat annoying.  Although I guess there is always a counter argument (thought of one while I wrote this, ha ha!)  I own an xbox 360, although I would never consider playing an old xbox game on it.    8-)

What happens when the laser eventually goes on it, happened to me with my ps1 and has happened to people with ps2s.

Not including decent backwards compatibility these days is like going back to the dark days of tech.

We are wanting our technology to be thinking "what will be useful in 10-15 years time?".

Would be nice to not have a massive collection of consoles so i can play my old games when i feel like it. I do still play the ps1 final fantasies on my ps2.

Absolutelly!! I used to work at Gamestation when the main PS2 - Xbox - Cube battle was ongoing and believe me every Sony fan boy, official, representive etc.. all used to make a huge deal about how PS2 was better value because it gave you access to the huge range of PS1 games as well as the PS2 catalogue. Their reps used to be VERY smug about it so the fact that they cant continue this 5 years on when their rivals have is frankly unforgiveable and makes them look quite foolish.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

does a bit....not my problem tho.

We have a holiday home, so the trusty PS2 stays there and still gets used, as it wasnt worht enough to trade in. Best quote I could get was £15, so I kept it.
And at any rate, since getting the PS3 I very rarely [if at all] play PS2 games. Too busy either on CoD:4 or WoW.

The size of the hd on the UK model isnt an issue, as it can just be swapped out. The more annoying things are the lack of WiFi, half the USB ports and no PS2 compatibility. Its almost as if sony have decided "right, well get rid of all the crappy versions of the console that no-one wants by making it the only version available in Europe, and screw them".

mines got Wifi, all the UK 40gb ones have
