Lousy 3D aside it does exactly what it says on the tin and more. Fantastic pre-summer blockbuster. I won't post too detailed a review lest I end up littering it with spoilers but if you've enjoyed the superhero fare to come from Marvel so far then you'll love this.

I couldn't see how I would enjoy a post converted CGI 3D film so I stuck with the bland 2D option.  Thoroughly enjoyable.   Although disappointing I think my local Odeon's 7.1 wasn't working quite right, it was all coming from the front and very quiet to what I am used to.  I could have sworn they were showing a pirated copy.

On a side note I much preferred Mark Ruffalo's Hulk interpretation.

I did too. I liked Ed Norton's version when I saw it, but Ruffalo's was even better. The actual Hulk really benefited from being motion captured as well so it was actually Ruffalo acting rather than just being a CGI creation.

I much preferred Thor to Captain America. Not sure why. Possibly I found America a little too cheesy in terms of the action, whilst Thors fighting wasn't (without the hammer that is). Question is where do you place the film when compared to Iron Man, Thor, Capt. America...

As far as films go for my own level of enjoyment (worst to best) it would be

Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, Iron Man 1, Avengers.

But then that pretty much follows on with who was my favourite from when I was a kid. Iron Man was always a big hit with me, Thor to a lesser extent, I never understood the Hulk craze and used to loathe and detest Captain America.

It was a tough job but Joss Whedon has worked wonders with it. It must have seemed like a nightmare trying to fuse all of the different styles together (Iron Man's high tech world, Thor's Shakespearean fantasy world, Captain America's camp action adventure) but it's been done incredibly well. They even manage to turn Black Widow into a character with a bit of humanisation, no longer is she just a smoking hot action figure.

Incidentally Tom Hiddleston turns it up a notch after Thor and makes an even more incredible villain. In many ways he steals the show, but that's fine because he really has to when he's cast against the various Avengers actors. And Ruffalo's Hulk is actually quite scary and could have ended up being full of whining emo "I hate my parents" rage but it all ends up being rather powerful emotional stuff.

As you'd expect there's a load of comedic moments but they've got perfect timing and never detract from the action or the drama. There are also a few moments that are quite grim and a fair bit darker than we've seen previously in any of the Marvel films. Not that they're trying to go all grim and gothic and take on the Batman franchise, rather they just use it to heighten the tension somewhat and to illustrate why it's actually quite a serious threat that they are facing.

The after credits scene sets up the bad guy for the second Avengers film, but you'll probably only get the reference if you've followed the Avengers in their comic book form at some time in your life.

I didn't realise this was out already. I'll be dragging the gf to see this just as soon as I've watched Thor and Iron Man 2 to get up to speed, can't wait!

Cypher

It started last night Nige.  The only film I haven't watched in the series as such is Captain America, I honestly think that one was the most important in terms of having a back story understanding.  Iron Man 2 doesn't link in that much strongly apart from small side stories.

Clock'd 0Ne

Captain America was definitely the worst of the lot for the reasons given above, so you're not missing out other than on backstory.

DEViANCE

I really enjoyed it, all the characters got enough screen time, loads of funny lines and great cgi. I watched it in 2d and was happy enough I don't think 3d would have added anything to it.

Might go and see it again this weekend if I get time.

Bacon

Loved the movie, watched it today, one negative is that Empire Cinema's suck for legroom.

Really enjoyed this too. And your right, Captain America was the weaker, He works in the group because of his leadership and tactics as well as his strength and how he brings the group together.
I do not think it was the script at fault etc but more the actor not really giving that across enough.

I do not get why Romonoth is so scare of the Hulk? Character wise and comics did he do something like beat her up bad once or something?

I had to complain to the Cinema though, side curtains never opened up to get the full view for the movie and I think they knew it was broken as the movie projection did not overhang and it look a bit squashed. I think they adjusted it to fit.

Because she knows he could quite easily kill her if he goes on a rampage.

Binary Shadow

Saw this sat night in 3D, loved it.

I'll probably go again and see it in 2D, not sure what the fuss is about re the 3d, it doesn't take anything away from the film as far as i can see.

3D always takes away from a film, it turns it into blurry crud.

Admittedly it wasn't too badly done in the Avengers (apart from one horrendous scene when Hawkeye arrives at the helicarrier and the jet has its back doors open) but it's still always better to view in 2D.

That is why 2k and 4k TV's will be the thing and will sell better then the 3D TV. Why some people have a 3D TV is because they have bought the best Samsung on the market and 3D comes with it. Ask people with one how often do they use it or if at all and you will find most dont.

2k and 4k amazing looking Movies at home - You would never go to the cinema again!
It also means if you show TV and movies over the air as it were the copying and stream/download on the web in those resolutions and processing that to do so because all that much harder short term till things like hardrive storage increases again etc.

Bigger success then 3D I feel

In terms of 3D at the movies, if you or your girl does not like 3D movies but you want to go see one or they do...
