Title: Best American Pop record of the last 10 years...
Post by: maximusotter on April 27, 2006, 18:21:35 PM
My current opinion...the prize goes to Wilcos Summerteeth.

Ive been listening to it for over five years every week or two--its a modern classic. Up there with "Revolver" or "Pet Sounds"

You should obtain it for maximum life listening quality.

Youd have the same taste if youd actually taken the time to listen to Summerteeth. :P Its breathtaking.

Dave, what youve suggested is not music, it is called "product". You might tap your toes to it, but understand that it is not created by muse, but by manufacture.

you asked for the best american pop record of the last 10 years.....

Britney spears is quite blatantly Pop & her debut single is arguably one of the top Pop records of the past 10 years... it was hugly popular, had wide ranging appeal and sold millions + launched her to superstar status

you might have linked to a talented artist who creates fantastic music but that doesnt necesarily mean that her record is the best pop record of the last 10 years

maxi, I listened to the 30 second samples and it didnt rock my boat :(

Personal preference would be Meat Loaf, Bat out of hell 2.

Britney is entirely intended to attract spotty young males and closet paedos :P

Dave, youre confusing quantity with quality. By "best" I mean best artistic merit, not most successful. ;)

So youve never listened to it then.

A good record isnt necessarily about singles, its about the cohesive journey of all the songs. 30 second samples dont do sh*t to convey that.

Actually, two UK records would probably be in my top ten, if you make the list international, Radioheads Kid A, and P. J. Harveys Stories From The City, Stories From the Sea.

Im not saying it isnt good stuff but its just not my style of music. A good record may be more than the sum of its tracks but to a rocker a rap album isnt likely to score highly.

Youre old enough to not dismiss music because of style, or so I thought. If you were serious about that comment though, you shouldnt like Meatloaf either, which is also heavily orchestrated studio pop from the Phil Spector camp of audio layering.

The only question necessary is that one which The Duke so famously asked, "Do it swing?"

music is something different to everyone. But if you go by sales does that record rank anywhere in the top million?

It was critically acclaimed at the time and the Amazon sales rank is a acceptable 3K.

The spotlight review from Amazon really sums it up well

Quote from: Terry KelleyWhat do you say about one of our generations most defining albums when no one has heard of it? The music, lyrics, and that undefinable edge of this album rank it as an all time classic, but few critics would rank this in their top picks. The reason is simple: Wilcos success has always been limited to intelligent discerning individuals looking for great music-not the next big thing. Wilco might never become Top-40 radio darlings, or their next album might propel them to popularity on par with the Beatles. Either way, they remain one of the best bands out there-no matter what genre of music you listen to.

Summerteeth is a miasma of rock, pop, and country music swirled into an amazing tapestry of sound. The songs evoke hard and true feelings: bitter anguish and bubbling euphoria. Like all truly great albums by truly great bands, they defy description and they work together. Wilco doesnt use cheesy concepts or themes to tie their songs to one another, but this is one disc you have to listen to all the way through to appreciate.

In the end, that greatness may be their commericial undoing. Although certain tracks would certainly work on pop radio, theyre not as good by themselves. To hear one of Summerteeths songs without hearing the rest of the album is like reading a single and random chapter of a great novel-it may be good reading while youre reading it, but you have to read the whole thing to appreciate its magnitude.

"Via Chicago" may be my favorite song of all time. Its a heartbreaker.

maxi, I could argue with you for months that House MD is the best thing on TV to come from America in the last 5 years but you would probably never agree with my assessment.
