Got it the other day, stuck the DVD in my pc and... nothing happens.  At all.  Any suggestions?

Nothing at all? Didnt spin up etc? No lights flashed?

Silly question but are other disks working, at the very least it should spin up.

funkychicken9000

Light flashing every second for a while, no spinning that I could hear, but its a quiet drive.

I just gave some other stuff a go; CDs work fine, my other DVD game discs do not.  Im going to head into town and get a lens cleaner later, see if that fixes it.

Pretty annoying, this drive is less than a year old.  My last one went a similar way, cleaning didnt seem to help though :S

Kunal

Which brand is it? Was your last the same? Is there a lot of dust in your room?

funkychicken9000

Last was a pioneer, and yes my room was pretty damn dusty.  It was in a shuttle so I took the tray endplate off to make it less clickety-clackety as it pushed through the bay door.  This meant it got pretty dusty, which is why I reckon it died.

This time round I got an LG H22N, left the tray end plate on and stopped using aerosols (its amazing how much of a difference this makes!).  The room isnt really that dusty any more, but I have a feeling that the way this shuttle is designed means theres lots of airflow through the dvd drive :/

when you right click and explore on the disc can it see it at all?  I was just thinking you may have clicked do nothing when a DVD is put in.  Then itll ignore the autorun file on the disc when it realises its a DVD.

If it cant see the disc in explorer then its a bigger problem

Silly question: This sounds silly but it is a DVD drive and not a CD drive isnt it? :D  Ive swapped drives before and forgotten theyre not all DVD capable.

Bioshock for the pc has the stupid sony digital rights crap on it and while I not heard of it on this game but when they tried to use it on music discs (and then got told off for it) many people bought them put it in their computer and they would not be read.
Think it was a combination to do with the drive or the disc being dodgy or something or both in fact.
Try it round a m8es if it loads up its the drive, if not take it back as the digital rights on it is screwed

funkychicken9000

No autorun problem, the drive just plain acted as if there was no disc in it.  And yes it is a DVD drive, its the only drive in my shuttle and hence gets a lot of movies thrown at it.  My rooms become venue of choice for movie nights at uni since I got the 2407 :D

After a bit more experimenting, it still doesnt recognise dvds when plugged into other machines, so its yet another kaput drive.  The pound shops finest lens cleaner did nothing either.

RMA all filled out, Ill pop to maplins in the morning to take advantage of their lax returns policy and get myself a stopgap

Kunal

While it may not be this you may want to dust your room every now and then  ;)

Imagine how much must be collected in your heat sink if your drive is acting up from it!

funkychicken9000

Its not too bad in there, it had a good cleanout in Jan.  The other pc I tested the drive in though is a different matter - there must have been about 200 dead moths and flies in the bottom of it and the whole thing was thick with dust and cobwebs :S

Cheapest internal dvdrw in maplins = £50
Cheapest external dvdrw in maplins = £40

It was a no-brainer.
