In an odd turn of events, Ive read a couple of books in the last month or so.

My favourite book by far is The Tooth Fairy ( http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0312868332/grahamjoyce ). I dont know why but I connect with so many of the characters in the book. When I finished it, it was like Id lost some close friends, like I would never see them again. Strange.
Im gonna see if I can get hold of any other of the authors titles.

What have you read recently that has been brilliant?

zpyder

I think Ive mentioned it before, but Larry nivens "Ringworld" has a good balance between a subtle sense of humour, science and philosophy.

Other good books are any of the Cthulhu mythos short stories or Lovecraft omnibuses.

And the last fiction I read was Stephen Kings "Duma Key". Not one of his best, but when put next to other bits of his recent stuff it does shine. Read the last 1/4 of it in one go as it built momentum and really did make you want to know what happens next. And totally written in a format that will see it made into a film or mini-series sometime soon I reckon.

Quixoticish

Ive been ploughing my way through Neal Ashers books lately and I must admit they are an absolute blast. The first one in the series is a bit rough round the edges but you can really see his writing style improve through the novels and Id definitely recommend them to any sci-fi fan.

Serious

Brothers in Arms : Ben Weaver is quite interesting for a futuristic war read.

Just read a few books by Robin Hobb and enjoyed them.

Also resently re-read Join Me and Yes Man by Danny Wallace which are bother entertaining.

Half way through Mr. Nice atm.

I have the sequel sitting here on the desk at work, never read it but clocked it in Oxfam for a quid so nabbed it.

As for the man in the high castle, is there any Philip K Dick book that does have a cheery, happy go lucky ending xD but thats why I love his books.

I kinda thought that Time out of joint was sort of happy? Though a little disappointing (but only because I totally didnt see it coming heh)

Alien8

after a bit of googleing about other alt history stories it seems he intended it to be a two parter, but could no bring himself to read any more about the horrors the Third Reich did, so never completed it

Leon

I loved most of the Philip K Dick books but near the end of his career / life he got a bit too random

Last book I read was the Mass Effect novella, along with a few other Japanese titles you lot wouldnt be interested in. :P

Serious

Just read On the Edge:My Story - Richard Hammond. That in itself is a bit of a mislead as on the inside title page it has with Mindy Hammond in smaller print and almost half the book seems to be her account of helping him after the crash. They should have been put on equal terms IMO.

It doesnt cover much of his life before the crash at all, theres a tiny bit about his childhood, his life in radio and TV before Top Gear. The main story is obviously coming up to the crash, what happened and the aftermath from it, this it handles very well.

For anyone interested in what actually happened its well worth a read.

Advice: Dont get in a jet powered car, go at over 300mph, and expect to survive a crash without a serious injury or death.

I read the Mass Effect book a couple weeks before the game came out and enjoyed it. Also was nice to have some background before I played it :)
