Which one ?

Compaq presv6610eo with AMD 64 x2 TK-55  2GB RAM  160 GB and Disc nVidia Geforce GO 7150M

or

Packard bell Enmx36v088 with Intel celeron M520 2GB RAM  160 GB Disc  and ATI X1100

and why ?

Beaker

the HP.  The Turion CPUs are pretty good for the money.  Plus, it isnt Packard Hell.  They break, for fun, and their aftersales is works than OCUK.

I am also considering one a bit more expensive a

Toshiba SATU200101 with Intel core duo T5250 2GB Ram 160GB Disc and Intel GMA X3100 Graphics.

to bad about the Packard bell as it has regular network
and WLAN the compaq has WLAN only.

Beaker

the HP does have a 100Mb LAN port on it as well.  Ive got the HP G6031EA, which is the lower spec version of the same machine.  Its got a LAN port on the left hand side about halfway up.  RIght next to the softmodem port.

could be the paper I have about it does not tell all it has an etc. after a few things it lists :)

Sorry for being nosey... but how much are those laptops going for?

Avoid Packard Bell... so crap. I am typing on one right now. has no working CD-ROM... in fact it fell out such was the build quality, the PCMCIA gave up, the sound is screwed, and the only thing that does work properly is well... the computer itself thank god. :D lol.

Around £400 here in sweden.

And by the sound of it I will avoid Packard Hell.

Rivkid

Agree with Rich al the way! Packard Bell are terrible build quality.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

dell 17 inch widescreen inspirons are in around that money

Ive just bought a Dell Vostro, which I am very happy with, very solid build and got it at a good price thanks to hotukdeals.

I know there was a deal where you could get a very reasonable vostro for about £330, although that one has currently expired. But obviously probably not much help in sweeden. As for HP I agree they do make good machines.

Thought I would hi-jack this thread instead of starting a new one.

My mum wants a laptop (god help me) so Im looking for one around the <£400 mark. Ive only ever had experiances with Dell & HP laptops and their options are:

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspnnb_1525?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs]Dell%20-%20£399

Intel® Pentium Dual Core Processor T2330 (1.60Ghz, 533 MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium - English
1 Year Base Warranty
15.4" Widescreen WXGA (1280x800) TFT Display
2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x1024]
160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive
Integrated Intel® Graphic Media Accelerator X3100
8x DVD+/-RW Optical drive, including SW
4-cell 28WHr Li-Ion primary battery

HP - £399

AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK53
2GB Ram
160Gb HDD
DVD Writer
nVidia Go6100
15.4" WXGA High Definition BrightView Widescreen

Which of these would be a good option you think? Are there any others worth looking at instead? Will only really be used for Wireless Internet, Streaming some .AVIs and basic stuff... They are generally over specced for that but something that wont need to be replaced for awhile would be nice and while you can drop some spec on the Dell machines there doesnt seem to be many other options with the HP ones.

well thats going to open up a can of worms.

Personally if you want the most bang for the buck go Dell. If you want less power more reliability go HP.

I have both sitting right in front of me a HP NC6400 and a Dell d630 (and some Acers but well pretend thats not true!. The Dell offers more bells, whistles etc.. - the HP is just a workhorse and doesnt play up EVER!

From that line I jumping at HP as its for my Mum (who Im pretty sure is going to use TipEx instead of Delete) and I cant be arsed with the hassle :P

I finally got this for £515:
Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PI2530c Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 1.66GHz 2MB L2  667 Mhz/ 2048MB / 250GB / TFT15.4 / DVDRW / Win Vista Home Premium/ 4in1 card reader /webcam /Wifi / LAN
The DVDRW does Dual Layer.
I think I got a good price being in Sweden and I have had friends using Fujitsu Siemens without problems.
