Title: Build me a Monster System
Post by: dogbert on July 22, 2006, 00:44:55 AM
I am going to finally buy myself a new system after upgrading and bodging for many years. Current System will be retired to file server/email - office work etc.

Price - Within reason, Im after one PC for extreme gaming/media station.

O/S will be Windows XP or 2003 server until Vista goes retail.

The main requirements are:

Base Unit - Ã,£2000
- Quiet as possible : Though Not water cooled.
- Cutting edge CPU design: AMD64 FX or Intel64 equivalent.
- Graphics:  NVIDIA - Not ATI
- Audio: Creative, unless theres a good argument for something better.
- Disks: 300GB+ SATA2, no special brand though Seagate have served well up to now.
- Case: Doesnt have to be windowed, must be practical and well designed.
- DVD Re-Writter

Monitor - Ã,£250 (Ill want two for duel screen operations)
- 19" or 20" Flat screen or equivalent, anything but CRT becuase of space.

Speakers - 5.1 Ã,£50 to Ã,£100

Headphones - Ã,£30 to Ã,£50

Keyboard & Mouse - Up to Ã,£100

Budget, then we can work something out.  With that spec youll get a 4k system specced out

For Example just using one site and not spending ages trying to decide:

...Budget added to first post...
 8) Prices are not set in stone, if a screen is Ã,£270 and has a far better spec then an model under Ã,£250 then Im flexible etc..

The new Core2 processors should easily meet your requirements re cutting edge processor. Just read a review and for most things they hammered the present AMD units plus they are based on low power tech so should be relatively easy to keep quiet.

They are also supposed to be ideal for overclocking if thats what you want to do...

You definitely want an Intel Core Duo 2 CPU, blows the doors off AMDs current top end CPUs!

That RAM is no good for that system.  AM2 CPUs have a DDR2 controller, that RAM is only DDR1.

it was a 10 minute browse, not a dead spec.  The HDD are only SATA1 as well :)

Theres certainly something to be said for buying that level of system as a whole from an oem system builder like Evesham or one of the other established pc sellers, as they get better economies of scale (and dont pay anything like as much for the processors as you would have to), so consequently you get better vfm overall.
Itd be different if you were upgrading but considering the pc builders compete quite heavily with each other, you could get more for your money.

Starting with the Screen.

This is what I own now
http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7001473/700147301.shtml

It is an excellent CRT - Ive had it 5 years without a single problem, the dot pitch is 0.26 and its frequency response supports 100mhz at 1024, upto 60mhz at 1600.

Im after a 19" flat panel monitor that supports both 1600 for graphics and 1024 for games and video.

Those Abit boardds have been recalled...

Apparently they overheat very quickly :/
