QuoteA new Carmageddon title had been widely predicted after a countdown clock appeared on the official website last week - but it was thought that Square Enix, who owned the rights after buying Eidos in 2009, would likely be behind it.

But an announcement today revealed that Stainless, the English indie studio that created the original Carmageddon and Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now games, has bought the rights back and is working on the new title themselves.

Stainless co-founder and CEO Patrick Buckland said in a statement: Carmageddon has returned to its Indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience. Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we're excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today's platforms.'

Buckland's fellow co-founder, Neil Barnden, promised that the reboot would features the same 'extreme destruction' that graced the 1997 PC version.

'Carmageddon: Reincarnation will feature the same black humour and comic violence that made the original game such a success,' he said. 'We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt.'

The original is a classic and gave me some of the best multiplayer gaming experiences I can remember. When the 60 second timed demo first came out I must have played it to death 100 times over, I hope this can live up to it.

Loved the orginal games and been following the, lack of, news over the past month or so. Glad to see the orginal guys got it back off Square Enix and interesting that they have done the DLC route instead of full game... guess it cuts down on production / distro costs.

The original 2 games were great, the followup was quite poor but i'll be looking forward to this, this is one of the best PC Games we played over network at my mates place.

never played the original but Carpocalypse Now was an absolute classic! IIRC it was one of the first games I got after upgrading my K6-200's S3 Virge to a Voodoo Banshee. The sheer graphical power!! If this stays true to the original with current technology it should be amazing.

Remember the "censored" version where the people were all referred to as zombies and the colour palette changed so that blood was green?

I was working in a computer shop at the time, and enjoying the sheer power of SLi Voodoo 2 :D

Yeah, I don't know how they managed to top Carmageddon on the sequal, but they did it successfully. They even managed to come up with a much bigger brother to Don Dumpster!

If I remember correctly I got the patch which was 50Kb if that, from either a PC mag or from the internet, it looked CRAP with green blood!

I bought the censored version, being under age at the time, but because my local Game had run out of stock of the uncensored ones they bundled the patch with it. Result! :)

They best re-use that as the theme tune :D

Damn, you can just feel its going to have that same quality as the other games to it, after the disappointment of DNF I hope this can be one that gets it right.
