Title: Core 2 6800 ES
Post by: kranked on August 02, 2006, 02:54:35 AM
Righto, well I have a quick fiddle with this beauty of a cpu (me and the guys at work), and its quite simply rediculously fast.

Default clock speed of 2.93ghz with 4mb cache...

It happily clocks to 3.5ghz+ without any voltage increase, using OCZ ddr2 PC8000. Leaving multipliers as standard, just using fsb for now.

Scores just over 50,000 with GX2 1gb gfx card in 3dm01, with frame rates peaking at 999 at some points. Yes it whoooops the AMD FX60s ass, which we had in a different system - but very similar specced PC.

Interesting is though, that the AMD FX60 system scored about an extra 600 points in 3dm06, using the exact same gfx card - over the Intel system.

Either AMD have 3d capabilities perfected or the motherboard manufacturers have more tweaking to do with bios. Saying that, maybe Intel need to improve the chipset in order to catch up in that aspect...

I was looking at the matchups between the FX62 and the Core2Duo 6800 Extreme and it was seemed to be favouring Intel.

I have recently defected to Intel from AMD and will be phasing out my second AMD chip soon for one of the lesser Conroes (prolly E6300) but might come back should AMD do something in reaction to this... I mean at the moment AMD have Socket A, 754, 939, 940 and AM2 its a bit of a mess tbh. Intel are a lot easier to get around.

Bravo Intel, youve earned your crown :D

Cheers

Socket A has been phased out. Socket 754 is going that way. 939 and AM2 are the current products and 940 is for the server side of things.

Intel are hardly angels in keeping sockets consistant. Even when they do, they have a habit of changing the electrical specifications of the socket. Witness the various S370 flavours for proof of that. And bare in mind that although Conroe is S775, the motherboard and chipset need to have specific support for it otherwise it wont work. AFAIK the only chipsets that support Conroe atm are i965 and i975X.

And the Intel 945P chipset supports Allendale and Conroe. ;)

With the DFI RD600 board coming out in the end of August, we may see some nice overclocks. :)

Ive never recommended anyone an Intel system until these Core 2s came out.

Spank AMD and good value for money :)

Tempted to get one myself.  But spent too much on other stuff recently ;)
