Are Billion Routers anygood?
just got given one from Nildram, seems better than my current belkin so far.

also the router gives me some figures Ive never seen before on the belkin

       Downstream     Upstream

SNR Margin

:
   5.5    6.0    db

Line Attenuation

:
   54.5    27.0    db

Data Rate

:
   5856    832    kbps

do they mean much? are they anygood?

its says my downstream connection is 5.8Mbps but I very rarely see more than 1.5Mbps

Cheers
Rob

Apparently so, just a bit of an arse to set up.

I would be incredibly surprised if you got 5.8Mbps on a line with 54dB attennuation. The attenuation is just a measure of loop loss - i.e. how long the line is. SNR margin is the difference between the average noise level on your line and the limit of how loud the noise could be before it interfered with your connection - i.e. headroom.

The 1.5Mbps you receive is your throttled rate from Nildram. Enjoy! To check your un-restricted line speed, complete some speed checks at http://www.speedtester.bt.com - use your Nildram login (with the @gotadsl.co.uk or whatever it is) and do at least 3 tests at different time of the day. This website is hosted at your local exchange and does not touch any rate-throttled ISP network.

Piccies:

(1) Attenuation - sync speed:

(2) My line stats (ADSL 2+)

Any questions, just ask.

thanks for that info.

im actually with Tiscali, which Ive been VERY happy with untill recently and I upgraded to the MAXX service, since then my connection has been very inconsistent/intermitent and most of the time slower.

Trying to get it sorted now though, but there support isnt the best.

DEViANCE

Ive been advised by Tiscali I need to downgrade to 1mbps as my line cannot reliably run ADSL MAX.

sound ok? i couldnt get much sense out of them.

Check with this site first, http://www.speedtester.bt.com/

Post the results here and well be able to help more.

Remember to not have any other net apps running when you do the test.

DEViANCE

QuoteThe speed test has completed on test server test.speedtester.bt.com for user 01978720*** and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

3386 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is 88.105.242.10, your browser is reported as being Mozilla 5.0 and is running on Windows NT 6.0.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

     For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
     For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
     For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
     For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click disconnect in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.

Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISPs helpdesk.

I had a much worse result on this line when I was looking for an ISP, and I connect at 7meg solidly.

Those with more knowledge will be able to give a better opinion of Tiscali, not used them myself.

Beaker

I was just looking at your post in the thread about XP SP3.  I would honestly think your router is buggered more than I would think that the line is.  Ive had worse stats than that, and like WG I was connecting at 7ish Mb.  What router are you actually on?  Is it the one Tiscali give away, and put their own crappy customised firmware into?

DEViANCE

Its one that Nildram gave me(use them at a different house), a Billion Router.

I have an equally intermittent connection with a Belkin router aswell though.

tried different Microfilters?  im assuming you arent on an extension lead.

Ive never heard of the brand to be honest.

These days I never really settle for anything less than a Draytek or a Netgear on a budget.

I had a Billion ISDN card years ago, it was most reliable  8-)
