(probably done before on the old forum)...
No doubts, "its my life" is a good effort, but not even close to the original, which is one of my all time favourite songs...
Most people think Jersey Girl that Bruce Springstein recorded is better, it certainly sold better, than the maker of it, Tom Waits, singing and playing it, I dont :)
ooooh - ive got a one!!!!
Cash - Hurt >>> NIN - hurt.
Under the Bridge - All Saints
Everybodys Talkin at Me - Beautiful South.
Quote from: sdpUnder the Bridge - All Saints
heh, good one, but if you said that too loudly, youd get lynched! :P
Im serious, I think its way better.
Quote from: sdpIm serious, I think its way better.
i agree!
another two:
The Byrds >> Dylan - Mr Tambourine Man
Pet Shop Boys >> Elvis - You were always on my mind.. ;)
EDIT:
FYC >> Elvis - Suspicious minds.
Ah, my drunken state is too tuned into sarcasm through the powers of paranoia.
^ That sentence makes perfect sense to me.
QuotePet Shop Boys >> Elvis - You were always on my mind..
Indeedy!
Does Walk This Way (Run DMc) count?
Quote from: sdpEverybodys Talkin at Me - Beautiful South.
Ill agree with that one.
Ill add FLC - We Have All The Time In The World. Not just a fanboy one this, hearing it live is one of the few times you will hear such a fabulous song performed with credibility and spine tingling trumpet playing. Armstrong is gone, but the song lives on 8)

That was one i was going to use :P
Hmmm also - Living Ends version of tainted love.
"Whiskey in the Jar" by Metallica.
Dave.
Wonderwall - Oasis - meh
Wonderwall - Mike Flowers Pops - ftw
Cheers
Tongy
When the levee breaks - a perfect cirlce is a good one.
"Love Hurts" covered by Nazareth, but written by Roy Orbison. Nazereth version is surprisingly better, but certainly cheezy.
"Long Black Veil" was covered by Joan Baez back in the beforetime, and her crystalline voice suits the song better than johnny cash.
Neko Cases cover of "Train From Kansas City" is better than the Shangri-Las.
I also really love (dont know about better :P)
While my guitar gently weeps - SpineShank.

Quick, lynch him!!!!

Dave.
I prefer Thin Lizzys "cover". "Whiskey In The Jar" is actually a traditional Irish song and has been recorded by loads of artists.

Emmylou Harris - "For No One", awesome cover of the Beatles song, I think its somewhat more emotional.
The Meads of Asphodel; What a Wonderful World.
Thought Id throw the cat amongst the pigeons there.
Bill Baileys Slayer parody of "mirror mirror on the wall" :)
I shot the sheriff - Clapton
Say hello wave goodbye - Gray.
What about Marilyn Manson covers? Tainted Love, Personal Jesus, Sweet Dreams etc
Usually much better than the orignals imo but the orignals are still good though.

Im not really a Marilyn Manson fan but I am partial to his cover of Sweet Dreams.
Tainted Love was abysmal.

Yar, shes famous for doing "covers". Tbh, here in Butcher Holler, the home of Country (but not Western), theres a tradition of songwriting, and most recording artists not writing all or even most of their stuff. Emmylous always been a gal to not try to shine in the limelight too much, though she did have a period from 75-85 where she was rather productive. These days, she just shows up a lot at gigs and sings harmony with a refreshing lack of ego. Awesome beautiful woman. LOVE her stuff with Gram Parsons from the early 70s.
Emmylou Harriss cover of Gillian Welchs "Orphan Girl" on the Daniel Lanois produced
Wrecking Ball. Mind, I like the production better on
Welchs record, but Emmylous voice just takes it. Seen them both sing together in a small venue. Goosepimpley. :D Gillian and her partner Dave have their studio down the street.
Both records are smart Americana records that dont insult your intelligence. :ptu: The later Gillian stuff is a bit less stark. "
Time, The Revelator*" and "
Soul Journey" are brilliant as well. Youll flip over Daves subtle and tasty guitar solos. Hes one of the few folks in this guitar town than most players will fess up to being in awe of. :D
Sorry to gush, but such stuff is music thats really close to my heart.

But most of the time I like it this way
*This was recorded in Studio B across the Cumberland River from me. Hauntingly beautiful, the opening track has some of the tastiest guitar work from Dave. Its great seeing him play the little unassuming Epiphone from 1935.

Elvis Costellos cover of Gram Parsons "Im Your Man (Hot Burrito No.1)" is rather good. :ptu: Its called "Im your toy" in the track listings. An album only a true Costello fan could love. I think its ballsy as hell. What other new wavers were coming to Nashville to record old standards in 1981?
Gun > Cameo - Word up.
Cameo Word Up original ROCKED though :D lol
Quote from: M3ta7h3adCameo Word Up original ROCKED though :D lol
it did, but GUNs version is even rockier...
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
I did not know that was a cover.
Nazareths cover of "Love Hurts" is better than the Roy Orbison version if youre motoring at 55 and screaming along.
one i heard earlier on the radio
jump covered by girls aloud
dunno who sang the originol version

If its a cover of Van Halen they can burn in fiery hell
no it was women singing it
As much as I worship Elvis Presley, Fine Young Cannibals cover of "Suspicious Minds" on their 1985 eponymous record, is almost better.
Quote from: SamI did not know that was a cover.
As far as Im aware Bob Dylan did it first. He wrote the song but Im not 100% sure on who performed it first, Id imaging it was Bob Dylan though.

i think FYCs version is much, much better, the original is still good though...
i like elvis, but the covers always seem to go one better - you were always on my mind (pet shop boys) is always one i click on, on my ipod. 8)

girls aloud didnt cover it, they butchered it... :drama:
