Hello,

Another request for help, Im afraid.

Im using a Mac and need a half-decent desktop publishing programme. I obviously cant afford Adobes packages. I did find a programme called Scribus, but when I tried to install it on the Mac, it wouldnt play. I found some notes on installing, but they mean nothing.

http://wiki.scribus.net/index.php/Installing_Scribus_on_Mac_OS_X

I specifically cant install fink (its install notes are awful), and dont know where to run commands. I tried running a command from the Terminal by typing the folder path to the file I wanted to use, but it just said Cant find [the file]. Im on an Intel Mac.

Does anyone have any help they can offer, or can anyone decipher the install instructions (for Fink as much as Scribus)? Or is there a more simple alternative: free, or cheap?

Thanks very much,

Jonathan.

Is the version of Fink youre using a Intel Mac binary?

If it isnt, there is the problem... I am using G4 macs, but i am fairly sure, ney certain that you will need the specific file for the specific processor.

IF you are using the correct binary, then bare with me, ill have a mooch as i actually used FINK when i moved over to macs, but it was a long time ago.

Basically (sorry if i am patronising you) but FINK is an application which allows Linux apps to run in Mac OS X, it deals with all the incompatibilties and what not between the Unix siblings, it grabs the necessary binaries and dependancies.

It isnt easy to run and i have to say those instructions you mentioned are very presumptious. Like i say, ill have a go at installing it to get my bearings and see if i can help futher.

What do you need from a DTP proggie? Openoffice has its quirks, but it does do frames reasonably well. It also can wrap text around objects.

The difference between DTP and word processors has gotten smaller, thought Scribus definitely does a few things better. I found it buggy last time I tried it, but very promising.

It should be reasonably easy to install via Fink, afaik.

Im using a version of Fink for Intel Macs. Normal instructions to installl Fink are here:

http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/index.php?phpLang=en

but theres a specific news item on Fink on Intel Macs here:

http://fink.sourceforge.net/news/index.php

(3rd item down).

Any help, Badabing, would be great :)

Ive got to start creating alright looking leafelts and pamphlets, max. OpenOffice does its best, but falls short with anything semi-complicated.
