Ive got a PC ive been asked to rebuild here.

Its refusing to boot, just comes up with a black screen.
When booting from 3 different CDs it reaches the "Loading Windows" it then crashes out.  Taken all the cards and drives out one at a time and it still does the same thing.  Tried a different HDD, RAM and CD Drive and its still doing it   Im betting on a screwed motheboard.

Anyone else got any ideas?

as long as its not overheating... then yeah dead m/b or cpu

hard to tell wich without another cpu to try in tho :(

Beaker

either way its a 1600+

User is well overdue for an upgrade.  Hes got a rather nice Graphics card, sh*tloads of storage and bags of goodies like a TV card, yet hasnt had the CPU upgraded :\

Beaker

He just handed me Ã,£400.

case, board, CPU, RAM and "anything else that needs doing".  Should still clear and easy Ã,£50 for a couple of hours work.

That should be good enough to get something decent.

Core 2 E6300 - Ã,£118 (Ã,£64 for Pentium D 820 2.8 )
ASUS P5V-VM motherboard - Ã,£50
2GB DDR2 533MHz PC2-4200 - Ã,£123
Asus Ta-211 - Ã,£35
            Total Ã,£326 (Ã,£272)

Well, thats just one option. Or you could just take that CPU down to a Pentium D 820 and get away with another 50 quid :D

Either way its a nice system, but Core 2 duo is nicer.

Have you thought about the power supply.

If he has a fancy graphics card, and a sh*teload of storage, and hasnt upgraded his psu... could be an issue.

Serious

Easy thing to check, just tale off as much load as possible, ie all the drives.

Would be useful to upgrade the PSU anyway if hes going for a rebuild.

PSU, Graphics card, CPU and memory should give him adequate boost in performance.

Dont forget to acquire all the old components you remove for flogging on here/ebay ;)

All i need a decent motherboard with an AGP slot.  Only ones i can seem to find are Asrock, and I would prefer something a little better.  Im getting the newest tech Ã,£350 will let me for the dude, after a quick check through all I actually need to buy is CPU, MB and RAM.  The case is fine, just very very dirty.  Ill clean it up and give it him back.  Its a very nice aluminium Antec in brush finish.  PSU was upgraded when the GT got dropped in by the look of things.  Whoever did it for him should have told him at the time he needed to upgrade the entire rig to get any decent performace out of it!

anyone know if the E6600 is faster than the AM2 Athlon 64 5000+ Windsor Core ?

at the moment im looking at :
AMD AM2 Athlon 64 5000+ Windsor Core, Dual Core 2.6GHz, 2x 512KB Cache, Retail
Asrock AM2NF3-VSTA, NF3 250, S AM2, AGP 4x/8x, DDR2 533/667/800, SATA I, SATA RAID, ATX
1Gb (2X512Mb) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC6400 (800)

comes in at Ã,£320.

this rig _has_ to have an AGP port, ive got an AGP 6800GT that ive no intention of having to replace!

Edit : Also has to have 3 PCI slots that are usable, so no uATX boards or the like.

Yes it is, at everything except Sandra Floating point and memory integer tests.

I think the time for even the most hardened AMD fanboy to have to admit when the FX ad X2 are licked. I have shifted to Intel as they pwn atm.

however im having issues getting an 775 MB with AGP and normal PCi on it.

Mongoose

the fact that the Core2 is faster doesnt make the 5000+ slow of course, it just makes the Core2 incredibly fast. If you cant get a mobo for a Core2 that satisfys the requirements, I really cant see him being unhappy with the performance boost going XP1600 to X2 5000.
