Dodgy power this evening

Is anyone else having power issues this evening with the gales? I've never seen it this bad before, dipping lights, TV constantly resetting, and PC cut off twice. (At least I'm hoping it's the power issues causing the PC to cut off and not an impending system failure).

In other news can anyone recommend a cheap and cheerful compact UPS that'll give me at least a few minutes to shut down the PC properly?

When it comes to UPSs you are better off paying for an APC, the quality, batteries and software are much better. I wish I hadn't sold the extra ones I'd picked up, I would have at least one spare useful. There's usually the odd bargains to be had on eBay, anything from the Back-UPS range is modest and will give you a good 5-10 mins or so if you don't load them up heavily and depending on the VA rating.

Can't seem to find any good bargains at the moment checking eBay!

Looks like it was the PC dying a death and it was unrelated to the power issue.

Shut down twice after about ten minutes on, third time it shut down it wouldn't come back on at all apart from a very brief blip of lights and fans, and this morning it's just completely dead.

f**k.

You might find that the power problems have caused this as a side, my UPS has switched to battery backup a few times because of 'voltage fluctuations' that had no visible signs.

First step would be to try swapping the PSU if you have a spare and hopefully you'll find the mobo, etc are fine.

I had that, changed the PSU and it turns out it was the motherboard.

I've got a Hiper 420w you can have for postage if you like?

If you don't mind that would be handy. I've bought a new system anyway but it would be good to track down what the problem was. PM me how much you think postage will be.

I'm with Clock'd in response to your original question, I've heard stories of cheap ones blowing up and experience of cheap ones not lasting very long and stopping working when they have been needed most!

I'll weigh it and let you know.
