Binary Shadow

Got a 360 elite over the weekend, purely as it was well worth what i paid.

HDMI which is nice, 120Gb HDD.. cant see a use for all that space yet personally, the black case is awesome tho.

However since i went through 3 premiums im not overly confident thisll last very long tbh

Anyone else got one? the HD DVD playback through HDMI looks marginally better but i could be imagining it.

I got the elite since its uk release in september
I think it is brilliant and love watching movies on it, with all the issues with 360 I had concerns as well since in the house we have Ice women who thinks it is cold even if it is 25 degrees in the house and the heating is on HOT far to often but its holding out fine it seems so far.

It is a nice machine the elite

The new ones with HDMI are supposed to be more reliable, although the RROD error is caused by crappy lead free solder and the GPU becoming unsoldered.  Similarly to the Macs in the other thread.

So, you can either wait and send it back to MS, or fix it yourself.

Ive fixed my Hacked xbox, cost about £10 worth of parts from B&Q.
The X-Clamps that hold the heatsinks on warp the board. The fix rectifies that.  Tbh, after looking how the heatsinks are held down Im not suprised.  Although if your lucky enough to have the new fangled CPU/GPU combo, its been seen that the new boxes generate the same/less heat playing Halo 3 than an older one does just sat at the dash.

Binary Shadow

its just as damn loud so im gonna guess its producing the same heat lol

im not into cracking my xboxs open and have never had the red lights, only ever failed optical drives

soopahfly

Its the optical drives that cause the noise, not the fans.  Mines silent without the DVD drive connected.

Binary Shadow

seems fairly loud with no disc in tbh

soopahfly

still makes noise though

Mardoni

Got to agree its the drive. My first 2 360s were v. quiet in comparison to latest replacement. If I watch a DVD using the HD-DVD addon and remove any disks from the console it is almost silent.

If it is new give it a bit becuase mine was noisy and settles down after some use but mine was not making as much noise as your sounding like yours is but they are still shipping 2-3 different drives in the systems depending on where they are made

Deaths Head

Depends on the fans in the 360 too.  There are two kinds and one of which is more prevailant... Delta fans.  Notorious in old OC days of being the best air movers as long as you were deaf.  My elite has them but I sit across the room from it.
I am sure my Elite was initially quiet, but I am sure the DVD drive is now louder than it was.  Sometimes removing the disc from the tray and putting it back and closing drive makes it quieter but not always.

Dust getting in?

It is though 2 consoles now that have been rather noisy, number 3 must have a focus of noise reduction quite high in the list

Mark

god damnit I thought they were doing a nextgen version of elite
