Title: Eve Online anyone?
Post by: Beaker on January 13, 2008, 12:36:34 PM
Just tinkering around with it, signed up for a second 14 day trial that Im going to extend by actually registering my card.  Love the game, but wanted to see what its like before i stumped up the cash for it.

I found it gets quite tedious very quickly. For a game I can appreciate that its got a lot of scope and is very in depth but its something of a sandbox MMO, the missions are very repetitive and you spend a lot of your early days subscribed just waiting for skills to train up. Once you get enough skill-points under your belt and join one of the big corporations then I understand it can get very exciting albeit a little political and catty at times. I never lasted long enough to get that far, between City of Heroes/City of Villains and Pirates of the Burning Sea Im too busy to contemplate devoting any time to EVE at the moment and I doubt Ill be re-subscribing in the future. Its a real marmite MMO, some people love it and some people hate it.

I played a trial of it not so long ago.

I get the feeling you have to put a lot of time into to get anywhere.

Ive been playing for just over a two years. The guys are right missioning can get tedious.

I basically have 2 corps. 1 that lives in 0.0 and does lots of PVP. People are wrong to suggest you need to spend lots of time before you can participate in this. If you want to get involved asap I think its about a month or two to get into an interceptor. Its a small fragile ship but good fun in PVP.  However, if you want to make money in lawless space youre gonna need to be able to fly a Battlecruise or a Battleship. Preferably a BS. Those ships do take time to be able to fly well.

The other is for new players/industrialists. This the smaller of the two. Only 3 active people in it atm, more if you include alts.

Gimme an evemail  ingame. I can get you into our open channel to chat with our friends and my corp members. My character is Namutron.

I played it for 4 months or so...managed to level up enough to run a mid-sized mining ship, then some cow in her interdistor comes along and blew me up.

I thought, bollocks to this, all the bloody hours Ive spent trying to earn enough money for upgraded mining lasers etc, the ship, blah blah. I realise that its random and people will do what they like, maybe I would have stayed were it not for the fact it was costing me 14 quid a month.

EDIT: I forgot to add I do actually like the game for its depth, however you cant really fly the ship which is a massive disappointment. Pointing and clicking gets mighty boring. And you can warp through planets as the collision detection is off.

I resently reactivated my account and found something quite annoying...

When I last quit I happened to be in the middle of SMASH (an alliance) space at the station for Kids that cant spell good but want to spell good in the middle of 0.0 space. Now I have reactiavted my account, Im not longer in my corp and Im stuck in this station as SMASH work on a not blue shoot it policy :(

Sooo... Either I jump clone out and leave all my stuff or I hang around untill I can get into a SMASH corp :P

Sell your stuff in Smash Station, buy an amarr frigate, shove a MWD in it, with overdrive mods + cap battery, and run.

mine used to do 4.5k/s admittedly huge signature, but cruise missles and torps dont travel fast enough to hit it :D was orbiting a battleship for 3 minutes before warping out of there.

If youre stuck in a bubble, or a web, then yes youre screwed... but a fast frigate, and the new warp to 0 function should see you right.

Oh and dooms... NEVER DOCK IN 0.0 and log off! :P always safespot

I used to play, but found the skills a grind after trying it again, its annoying being a player of 2 years, knowing how stuff works, but realsiing that your skills are crap in comparison to everyone elses.

BTW... you cant just train up battleships and survive in 0.0, I have difficulty tanking in 0.0 occasionally and my armour/shield skills are relatively high. :D

TBH the only online game I would ever play would be a modern remake of Elite

Then obviously youre doing something wrong. I have spent a lot of time discussing, with newer pilots who join my corp, the ins and outs of ratting in 0.0. People are now using the newer Battlecruisers to rat a lot. But a Battleship taking 2 BS and a few cruisers, npc ones (you know the damage theyll do) is a piece of cake.

edit : of course in deep 0.0 you get 4 BS spawns and all that. But obviously thats the exception in the matter.

Is that the actual top speed of the ship or the acceleration its capable of? The first would be downright insane as it wouldnt even maintain orbit at that speed.

YEAH, you better believe it.

With all the shield generators you can stick on it, and a LARGE plasma accelerator. Ramming smaller shps was teh win

I could tank a dual BS spawn in a ferox no problem, providing I had decent resists matched to the enemy, but tanking a raven proved a right arse, and scorp... well I used to just jam, screw tanking, I had a small tech 2 armour rep, and shield booster to regen shields between jams. :) But that was when ECM was insanely powerful :)

I do 0.0 ratting in a Battlecruiser.

Myrmidon with some tech2 rails and med nos in highs,
Passive cap recharge II (cant remember what they are called) in meds - sometimes one swapped out for a AB, depends what im after.
2x Medium Armor Repair IIs, 2x Energized adaptive plating, 2x N-Type hardners (changed depending on rats).

Used to run with 5x Orges but due to resent changes cant do that anymore :( at the moment using 5x Hammerheads IIs untill I can get OrgeII skills trained up.

Can happily take most 0.0 rat spawns, I do generally move on if there are any jamming frigates in the groups as they just annoy me and I would rather go find another spawn

actually thinking back it wasnt tanking that is my issue. Its killing things :D

Id sit there with 2 1.3million BSs pounding me, and be there for 30 minutes unable to break their tank.

Thats when 5 Orges came into play but stupid nerf stopped that :( 3 or 4 small techII railguns can do an alright amount of dmg if using some good ammo.

You just needed better skills then.

Even my lowly Nighthawk can do enough damage to send 1.3bil BS over the edge and they seriously lack in the damage department.

With a suitably fitted BS youd eat through most stuff.

My corp is part of Sylph, not the best alliance in the world but we like to PVP/Explore whenever we can. Odessa Operations is the name.

We usually have 7-12 people online in the evening, UK time. But if you want lots of action it wouldnt be the best place to come.
