I'm having trouble with the file sharing on my network.

I have a bog standard talk talk router which is a Huawei HG520b if that matters.

Through the wifi I have my laptop and PC connected.

I've setup a homegroup and both are joined to it with the same password.

Both computers show up on each other and show all the shared libraries and folders.

Problem is, if you try and open any of the folders it just times out as if the directory didnt exist.

Its the same on both computers

I can stream videos from both computers on the xbox which is also connected through wifi on the router.

I can ping the computers from each other and that is sucessfull.

I have no idea what to try next..

Anyone got any ideas?

I know you have probably tried already, but disable windows firewall and and any other 3rd party firewall you may have?

yeah I have disable Windows firewall on both computers and the firewall on the router and still the same.

Dont have any 3rd party FW software, just AVG free but dont think that has firewall.

No AVG shouldn't cause any problems, I'd re-enable your firewall on your router though, that wont make any difference on the local network, but will open you up to the internets!

Only other thing I can think of is maybe permissions? Try creating another share, brand new folder with nothing in it, and add "Everyone" as one of the users with full access?

Pretty much tried all that in some shape or form.

The joke of it is I just switched on an old WinXP laptop I had, connected it to the wifi, shared the C drive and now that is accessable from both Win7 computers. 

just to update this a bit. I re-installed windows on the laptop today and everything is perfect now, I always thought that the windows installation was a bit corrupt.

Only just saw this thread, was going to suggest changing some of the advanced sharing options (such as public sharing) so homegroup wouldn't matter to much

Having exactly the same problem again. Win7 file sharing is fooking crap.

The desktop can see the laptop and access files on it.
The laptop cant see the desktop, sometime it can see for media streaming but not file sharing.
The laptop can ping the desktop.

Very strange, I've got 5 W7 computers working on the network with no issues at all, I assume your laptop is wireless?, have you tried using wired?

Also are the networks in W7 setup as "Home" networks? That's what I'm using and wonder if the others have more security?
