Title: Firefox killed my laptop!
Post by: Kunal on December 17, 2006, 14:05:03 PM
Bit shocked this has happened - normally its pretty stable for me, but Firefox has killed my laptop  :?

All I had running at the time was Outlook Express and Firefox with two tabs open. I was looking up an income tax calculator for my sister when one of the links I clicked on caused FF to crash. I couldnt kill it from task manager which was odd. Also found it odd that there was two firefox.exes in the process tab (one at 45mb, other at 12mb).

Windows was still responsive but it wouldnt allow me to shutdown, so I had to do a turn it off from the power switch. When I went to reboot it would get passed the XP loading screen then just stop all activity at an empty black screen. Tried loading last good config, same result, then tried safe mode with and without networking - both failed to get into Windows!

Anyone seen anything like this before? Ive never "repaired" windows from the disk before, could normally get into safe mode and fix it from there - what do I stand to loose by repairing? Ill probably wipe the disk once Im back in and can save a few things.

Sounds like something like a flash or video file was in the web page, it caused firefox to lock up, you tried to open another firefox which as the last one had the profile locked it tried to open in a new profile hence the two firefox

your computer was probably trying to handle all this and using the hard disk alot

you hard reboot the thing and it jumped the hdd which caused data loss in the system files, hence causing boot lock ups

It will scan for corruption, i believe.. Any corrupt files it will ask if you wish to delete etc

Just give it a shot and see what happens, if after a repair attempt im guessing it will either be a data recovery service and a format. Or it could even possibly end up going as far as totally screwing the drive and may need a new drive. Go through that way. :)

Looks like its corrupted something XP really needs to boot, TBH there are plenty of options here.

Only way to see if the repair function will do it is to try. Last time this happened to me though it needed a full reinstall. Didnt loose much as I copied the important stuff off onto another computer.

Tried repairing from XP CD... it gets as far as searching for previous XP installations and then dies... this is before any real options are given (only F2 for storage controller and automated recovery (for which I dont have a floppy.. or a drive!)

Next course of action is to plug the laptop drive into my PC to see what I can access, copy off, run any diagnostics and format.

Looking like a new drive is more than likely :( Saying that, chance to upgrade it to a 120Gb for Ã,£55.

Got the 2.5>3.5 adapter and plugged it into my PC.... appears to be working OK, no errors and I can navigate the drive.

Is there a way I use the XP disk to repair the installation on that drive even though its being booted/its an additional drive to the one the PCs running off?

My top tip for these sort of situations is get an alternative rescue disk and use that to format the drive. With that accomplished reinstall windoze XP and everything should work.

If you need stuff off the drive then use another computer and copy it over using that.
