time for a change, whats the best.

thanks.

Built into router firewall ftw :)

Jaitsu

^^ yea

software firewalls just eat your resources if youre not careful... if you have a router make sure the firewall is enabled, if it is then no need for any software

I find them dam easier to control and set up as well

Mardoni

hardware fws are great but a lot of NAT firewalls dont allow you to control whats getting out, only whats trying to get back in.

I still use ZoneAlarm on my laptop as I occasionally use that on Public Wifi networks. Otherwise Ive been more than happy with the firewall/ip filtering on Netgear, Draytek and Cisco routers :)

M3ta7h3ad

Sunbelt personal firewall. Used to be known as Keiro Personal Firewall, and Ive used it since around 2001. :)

checkpoint FW-1 NGX R65 on SPLAT. Thats the best (He did ask :))

I can get you an eval license, being a reseller and all.

Beaker

Just dump the crappy software firewall, and pick up a Checkpoint as Mark suggests, or you can get an older SOHO6 on ebay for underĀ£30 these days.

bear

I would get ipcop an old PII -PIII
2 fast nics on wifi card a smaller harddrive cd rom reader.
I you will have a great firewall\ router\ acess point\DHCP
intrusion detection by SNORT etc.
Other add ons

m0n0wall is better than ipcop or smoothwall, and its not built on linux, its built on FreeBSD, which in itself is an advantage for a security device.

Unless you are not using wi-fi, then its best to have a software job like ZoneAlarm on *every* PC. TBH I would have these anyway just to keep viruses in check.

Agreed. Have a look at pfsense - its based on m0n0wall but with a few significant enchancements.
