Hi guys,

Long time no speak...

OK, well i am looking at taking over a forum, or setting one up from scratch.

I would host it on something like godaddy or some other commerical host...

How well would a package from someone like godaddy cope with hosting a very busy server with 200-250 people online at once.
The one i would be basing the new one is very busy indeed.... godaddy etc. go on about unlimited bandwidth, but would it work or would the traffic etc. cause problems?

Cheers

Dan.

One thing that will become apparent very quickly is this. Godaddy is sh*t.

This. These forums are hosted on 1&1 on their highest package along with my other websites for clients. They're not bad, but they're not fantastic either, there are probably better hosts out there but for hosting multiple sites I've found 1&1's control panel very easy to use and reliable. You do get what you pay for but they are large enough to resolve issues very quickly on the top tier with dedicated 24 hour support. My package is unlimited bandwidth/webspace but you won't need nearly as much as you think as long as you don't do anything daft like host everyones images and avatars.

You'll want a 1Gb+ mysql database size (don't sign up to one that offers about 100mb or something pathetic). Also a host with decent script execution times and memory limits. We're running on
an 80MB memory limit, 60 second scripting execution times and 20 parallel processes which is more than fine, you don't need to go overboard for one forum. You might find a host to compare that with.

If you want a decent UK based host I've used Heart internet before and found them reliable, not the cheapest mind.

What do you pay for this?

I use hostgator, which I know is akin to godaddy, but I've never had an issue, except once when the server was hacked, but then, the server tekforums was on was hacked the other day too...?

Thanks for the advice guys - good to see the old place ticking over and still banging out useful info'.

They are doing a deal at the moment, free for 6 months on all packages then from £2.49 - £9.99 a month on the top tier (which is actually really cheap for the quality of the hosting considering I run about 15 websites on it at the moment). https://www.1and1.co.uk/hosting-linux?__lf=Static&linkOrigin=&linkId=hd.subnav.linuxhosting

The thing that sets them apart is that the control panel makes it very easy to manage a volume of sites, they've not just installed cpanel and had done with it, its their own system. And you can set site by site PHP versions and configurations easily. It's just a decent package overall.

There was an issue with being hacked, but I put that down to an FTP password that should have been changed some time ago, so my fault really. I've got 1&1 Sitelock running now which scans for changes/malware etc on my top level domain, I shouldn't have any more issues I don't think.

Like zpyder I use hostgator, have done for years, usual cpanel stuff at the backend which makes installing phpbb or whateves a 2 min job.

I read that before when you linked to them. The page is a lot of waffle and doesn't really say much about the specs of what they offer, so it's impossible to tell. CMS? What does that mean, Wordpress, Joomla, etc? Something else custom. FTP and mySQL should be a given for any hosting.

"With FTP you can upload files to your webhosting like never before! Using a system that can both send and receive files is the easiest way to put a website live, our system does both, making it one of the best! Try FTP today with one"

I always hear people say they have no trouble with hostgator as well, never used them myself.

If it's helpful, one's I advise people to avoid are GoDaddy, Fasthosts, EUKhost, Namesco, 123-reg.

Only thing I'd say is dont use 1&1 to host the site and the domain.

Bought a 2 year .co.uk domain from them, 1 years hosting.

Decided not to auto renew the hosting... They decided to disable all access to their control panel. Left me with a domain pointing at a 1&1 advert for a year.

Repeated calls to their customer services resulted in no satisfactory outcome, nor did they really understand exactly what they did wrong, it was pathetic tbh and if I was as wise then as I am now I'd have written in letters of complaint demanding a refund and/or compensation for the hijacking of my domain name.

That said it was about a decade ago when that happened. Maybe things have improved since but there is no way in hell I'd give 1&1 any of my money again.

I don't think it's been possible for that to happen for a long time. Regardless of whether you buy a domain or hosting, you are always automatically given a username.websitehost.co.uk subdomain to access the control panel and websites/hosting from. It's this kind of thing that I was taking about that makes it incredibly easy to manage live sites and build sites, as well as routing domains to separate directories on your hosting in two simple steps e.g. /tekforums/ and /tekheads/

Did you do something with the tapatalk plugin, I'm unable to authenticate now.
