Got me a problem here, and i think it might be a duff CPU.

Power comes on, all the fans fire up and you occasionally get a startup screen from the monitor.  Its a HP and its running a Celeron D 2.66Ghz.

No error beeps, and the PC has worked fine before.

Any thoughts?

duff cpu = error beeps at least did when I had a pentium pro naff out on me. What about hard drives spinning up?

Could it be a completely duff graphics card?

Beaker

tried both the on-board and an AGP card.  Its annoying me now.  Ill have to have a poke around and see if there is a Celeron in one of the locla shops i think.

Edit: Everything spins up fine.  No error beeps at all, PSU is a 250 Watt and everything in this system is on-board.

Chances are it isnt a CPU problem if you get a windoze or even a bios boot screen.

Who said it was a windows boot screen?  You still POST with a duff CPU IIRC...

Have you tried disconnecting all the drives you can? Maybe hotswapping an IDE you know works?

Ive had systems hang during boot when ive had a knackered IDE/CD-ROM attached.

ooft.

Er... really obvious one here.. but er.. you have checked you have the system speaker plugged in yea? Spent ages troubleshooting my mum and dads pc thinking the motherboard was dead, but didnt have the damn speaker plugged in (was a ram issue).

Beaker

Tried all the suggested stuff, no joy :(

The System speaker is on-board as well, im gonna pick up a chip tomorrow, Scan are 25 minutes away and for Ã,£75 locally and Ã,£35 for an hour round trip im not even considering any of the local shops.

Depends on how duff the CPU is, if it is Duff. Plenty of motherboards wont post with a duff CPU but I suspect it may depend on type. My NF7(s) and a previous one wouldnt.

Beaker

well ive changed:
CPU
RAM
HDD
CDROM
PSU

Im assuming the Motherboard is fried.  Bloody hate these things that dont give you any error beeps.

I keep hearing people coming up with this nonsence

"It will still post without memory"
"If the processors duff it will still post"

No it wont.  I have never seen a board in my long long career of breaking computers ever come across one that does.

funkychicken9000

I used to work on 486s that posted with duff CPUs :D

some of the VIA based boards post with no RAM, but they only post far enough to tell you there is no memory. :\

Itll post with memory errors but only to go "beee boo beee booo beee boo beee booo" it will not post with no memory in at all however.

Never ever seen one post with a duff processor. Which is why I dont think this issue was a duff processor.

Which is why I said I didnt think it was a duff cpu in post 4.

Unfortunately there is always going to be the one in a million that does.
