Title: Getting Back into Warcraft Again!
Post by: Liam on June 23, 2008, 08:30:59 AM
Hi All, Iv recently started getting back into World of Warcraft again as i will have a bit of time to play again soon, i started out again this weekend and finally after all the patches and crap that needed installing had installed i finally got round to playing it, but 10 mins after i first started playing it the whole game just locked up, the mouse cursor was still working but nothing in the game, totally froze. Then the mouse cursor locked up! crap so i rebooted the comp and it was fine and when i ran WoW again it was fine for another half an hour then the same thing happened again! only this time i waited out tosee if anything would happen and then after a minute or so the screen went black and then it came back on again and then went to a BSOD and the 2 seconds later the system rebooted!! :( so i restarted once again and it was all ok apart from my sound stopped working? So i did a little reboot again and everything was fine... hhmm i wonder what could be wrong? This is on my main rig with the specs shown in my signature. Also before anyone asks iv checked the temp of everything in my comp my CPU is around 42c ish and everything else is simular so it surely cant be anything overheating? Anyway my GFs mum who plays the game aswell said she is having simular problems where it shuts down or restarts her comp randomly, and she said that this has only been happening since patch 2.3.3 ish? Is anyone else having simular problems?

Thanks - Liam

Try defragging your drives. Read the error on BSOD. Could be a driver issue. I would say your error and your mums error arent related, its easy to blame a patch.

I tried to read it when it came up but within 2 seconds of the BSOD coming up thats when the system rebooted. :( Il give the defrag a try later.

thats never happened to me...but some old online game I used to have [freelancer i think...] kept doing the same think, i.e. lock up, BSOD, then manual reboot. In the end I just turned the auto reboot on and put up with it, but mine was internet related. The lag used to swing wildly and windows would think Arrgh!!! i dont kno [reboot]. Try checking your internet connection, and make sure your firewall is configured to allow web access to WoW.

Firewall wont BSOD and reboot, instead a popup will appear.

I would say its a driver issue, how about that for narrowing it down.

If it were me i would have reinstalled before installing a game, new motherboard/ gpu drivers, latest directx, patched the game, even modem drivers if your connecting through usb instead of ethernet.

It could be anything.

Since around patch 2.2 a lot of people have had problems with old graphic drivers causing BSOD's,
I had the problem in Kara ( on the stairs leading to Mores) but fine everywhere else strangely enough.

Get the latest drivers for both your graphic's and sound and see if that sorts it out :)

hhmm well iv ran the WoW repair tool yesterday and that basically restores WoW to default when you first start the program after the installation etc. but still to no avail. Also i have got the latest graphics card drivers installed for my 8800GTX too, i wouldnt think that updating my sound drivers would fix it either? Iv got all the latest over drivers too etc.

BSOD could be for any reason.

Another idea is to use a Memory Dump reader, i.e. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263

Right i finished re-installing WoW last night using the original CDs this time (originally i downloaded the full package client off the WoW website because i couldnt find the CDs lol) and it played fine for over an hour and then suddenly the whole sound on the game just cut off, and it never came back on and another 30 mins later it was still the same even though the gameplay was fine and this had happened before but only when the whole game froze before, so i restarted the comp when i came out of the game (sound was still not working even when i exited the game and it didnt play the windows shut down tune, but all i got was this quiet hissing sound??) and after restarting the comp the sound was working again, then i loaded up WoW again and after 5 mins of playing the sound cut off again!  :x So could this possibly be linked to the sound driver iv got installed for my X-Fi Elite? i downloaded new drivers for it last night but i havent got round to installing them yet but il try it later.

I use onboard sound, always used it, never had an issue. But i have read how some people have compatibility issues when running an X-Fi.

You could try uninstalling it, and remove it from the system physically, then boot the game again running the onboard sound and see if that causes an issue.

Aaaarrrgggghhhhh FFS!!!!! Ok got round to updating the sound drivers earlier to newest ones, Warcraft plays ok fur half an hour and then FREEZE! but the cursor didnt freeze and i quickly pressed Alt + F4, exited to the desktop ok but when i attempted to start Warcraft again it was just stuck on a black screen with the mouse cursor, kept doing this everytime but after i rebooted the machine it was fine again. I hope Blizzard make some fix for this soon!

Remove the X-Fi and try it with onboard sound :P it would be uncanny if that solves it :P

Im also voting it being not blizzard problem but one of the drivers you are running.

Im nowhaving a problem with WoW...every time I go into a city, I get a BSOD lockup and have had to turn the auto restart back on, manual rebooting was getting annoying. Ive tried updating all of my drivers, nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

what does the bluescreen report as failing?

usually states a certain dll, essentially a driver.

I have a random nvidia driver problem that can kick in at any time and causes a restart, yet to find the problem, probably having so much going on over 2 screens.

dlls beginning nv are usually nvidia drivers

You keep forgetting to mention that your new to overclocking, and your system is overclocked. This is key information you should include  :P

As for a fix. Take your pc apart, rebuild it, fresh install of windows xp from your discs, which i hope you have, judging by what was said in my dvd thread :P, reinstall all the drivers, reinstall wow. Again check what the BSOD says, the specifics of it. If that fails im sure you can read the memory dump file

You might have misunderstood, me, it works perfectly until I go into a major city or try to log onto one of my characters in a major city.

The computer did exactly the same thing when I reset the bios settings, so next thing is to check the BSOD error message....I think it was a dll, but I know one good way to find out...

Its a driver issue. For some reason, when running something graphics- and system-intensive [as in trying to load the major cities in WoW], the motherboard rejects the VGA card and reboots. Hopefully Asus have got a fix for this, as Ive installed everything off the CD that came with it.

when you installed the new card did you totally clean out the old drivers?  This is a common problem when installing a new GFX card.  Its even more of a problem if you have flipped from nVidia to ATi, or the other way round.  its annoying, but its well known.  Also, DEP can cause issues with ATi drivers Ive found in the past.

I didnt have drivers in the first place. I bought the mobo and the 4850 to build a new system.
Also, the BSOD reads DRIVER_IQRL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, along with some error codes. Anybody know what this means?

what is the code after that?  and have you got DEP turned on?

1: the code after it is 0x00000000D1, and 2: only for essential windows things [the XP default]

Edit: Increasing the paging file size to maximum seems to have solved the problem. Now I cant get the fps below 75...no matter how hard I try.
