Just received my Orange SanFrancisco so Ive been looking for a phone tarrif. Giff Gaff (wacky 'for the people' sister to O2) seem to have great prices for unlimited internet.

£10 a month (no contract) gets you:

250 mins
Ultd web
Ultd texts

Ive got my free sim and am all setup to move. Anyone got any experience?

Just a couple of things:

'Unlimited' Internet - Check the FUP before you believe that one

Handset - Is it unlocked? As will need to be to use an O2 sim?

I assume Giff Gaff are an MVNO using O2s network, if so shouldn't be any different to O2

No phones, they're a sim only network.

As for fair usage policy, they claim its totally unlimited and i cant find anything saying otherwise. No tethering though.

Yeah I had a look after you posted and couldn't see a FUP either, BTW you can still tether, they wont know the difference anyway, unless you run up massive amounts of data.. Looks like a good service though..

When I was talking about phone I meant your Orange phone buy see they are pretty easy to unlock

Yes, I have been using them for about 6 months now, with no problems.

If you buy a 'goodybag' of calls or texts costing £10 or more you do get truly unlimited internet. Tethering is prohibited and they claim to be able to tell if you are doing this, how they obviously don't disclose, but they certainly do phone people that they suspect are tethering (presumably picking out those with any unfeasably large usage). The T&Cs also say that the SIM can only be used in a 'phone' so shouldn't be used in an ipad or anything similar that can't make phone calls. Again they claim to know if this is being done.

At the moment even if you don't buy a goodybag, all users get free internet up to 100MB per day with a soft cap, but that is due to change on the 1st April, with data being charged for. The unlimited internet with a £10 goodybag is not changing.

Prices are reasonable rather than being great, but they are obviously attracting a lot of customers with the unlimited internet deal.

They are constantly playing around with new products, offering various bundles of minutes and texts, to see what works and what doesn't. For example at the moment, the test product is their "Hokey Cokey" bundle. £5 gets you 60 minutes and 300 texts, but for every minute someone phones you, you get a free minute added to your allowance.

Customer service is covered by a dozen people who you can only send a message through their website (and they only work weekdays), there is no phone number. But the agents usually sort any problems fairly sharpish.

General help issues (how do I set my phone up, etc) are covered through the message boards by other customers. If you help someone out, then you earn credit, which can be converted into a top up on your phone, cash, or given to charity.

So not the phone company to use if a phone is life or death and you MUST be able to speak to the phone company if you have a problem.

And finally if you ask for a SIM from an existing member, you both get £5 when the new SIM is registered.

I guess they could be looking at IMEI ranges to see the device names, for dongles and iPads, but expect they can only really tell tethering through excessive use.

I'd imagine as long as you don't take the mickey then you'd be alright! (You sound like you speak from experience )

Newish. I found this board last year when I was wanting to put NZBget onto a Linkstation, and this was the only place I could find some sensible instructions, and joined to say thanks. And NZBget is still working perfectly on it.

No I am quite a moderate user, using the SIM in an Orange San Francisco. But I have seen reports on their message boards from a small (and we are talking count on fingers of one hand, small) number of users who have been contacted about their usage.

Good to see you are still sticking around, now we have the new forums up and running we are trying to get more users introduced! It's a very good group of people who hang around here, and the forums are being developed for the users, to make things much better!

Awesome, thanks PF62, great to hear an honest opinion on them.

I took the plunge and it seems fine so far. Not taken a goody-bag yet as the internet is free and i don't use phone or text much. Also still loving my San Francisco! Not quite as fast a desire but only noticeable when playing ROMS or similarly intensive task.

If so do you still have the refferal link? Or was that someone else..

Me and Bacon have been using Giff Gaff to talk to each other when arranging meet ups I haven't put the sim in my phone for ages though as I've not been over to his or up to knightys in a while so have only topped up once. It was a bit of a performance as their website was running stupidly slow at the time, as pointed out it seems like an okay network (cheap and cheerful) but don't come to rely on their services or anything, I get the feeling they could be the type of company just pack up shop and disband overnight one day if the milk turns sour.

I've found the mobile service faultless but I agree that the support / website is sometimes poor, but that's what they sell themselves as so its no surprise. I'm very happy with them overall.

I have unlimited internet on o2.

Sadly they don't offer it anymore and so even though I'm due an upgrade, I can't upgrade as they'd remove it from my contract.

bloody annoying. Though I asked the woman how much would I be spending on data a month and she said i'd used 2.4GB so far that week (travel + netflix + youtube = DATA!) and it was only thursday. Which at 3.50 per mb would cost a fortune.

So I'm stuck with a £40 contract, 600 mins, 600 texts, 12 mth, unlimited data, gold insurance, unlimited free weekend uk landline and x-net calls.

Don't think i'll find a better deal elsewhere, but giffgaff was looking interesting until you mentioned the lack of service.

It's not so much lack of service, even despite my first time issues getting credit on actual service is just as good as o2. Its just they don't operate customer support to pander to the average Joe that can barely work out how to access voicemail, it's very much no frills.

Cheers, but he needs a micro SIM, and if he clicks the micro sim link, I think it removes the refferal?

Is there a different link for a micro SIM?
