Title: Gnome has taken thumbnailing to a new level
Post by: maximusotter on June 07, 2006, 22:28:39 PM
I was playing with spreadsheets.google.com with a simple list and sum bike parts list, saved it to the desktop as an .xls, and just noticed that the icon is  a miniature snapshot of the spreadsheet. Now thats fancy! Amusingly enough, Gnumeric files do not do this, but MS format does.

I didnt notice that, but I too have also played with google spreadsheets.. its kinda nifty, but I didnt really know what to do with it. I am sure that it will come in handy one day though, slowly but surely Im using more and more of Googles services :?

That is cool thumbnailing though, overall Nautilus is great for thumbnails :) if a little on the leisurely side, when you load up a huge directory of pictures.

A bit off topic, but I have moved all my JPGs from a folder I made called My Photos and now use F-Spot (http://f-spot.org) to look after everything, it made a copy of them all, in the corresponding area: ~/Photos/// according to exif :)

I deleted the My Photos folder and its all wonderful - its also faster than Picasa, at being Picasa, id say.. available in the repos, youve probably already seen it, tbh :)

Windows has been thumbnailing Micorsoft documents, spreadsheets, etc for sometime, but it is pretty fancy to see Linux doing the same with MS files. :)

Openoffice supported thumbnailing is pretty new, but weve had pdf, text, video, Photoshop/Gimp, image, and svg thumbing for a couple years. Some folks would argue that its pointless, but I think its useful eye candy.

I like SVG

I can have massive icons on my desktop without any distortion. lovely!
