I could just buy those watercooling kits which are "ready2go".. But having a read through various threads i may get a custom kit cheaper. Although I am totally new to watercooling with no previous experience. Now before you say anything, my friend (who has experience in custom watercooling) will put it on my machine for me so no worries..
I just need help buying all the materials I will need. Please keep in mind that I will also watercool my 3870x2 with this http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608629
I will also go quad when the q9450 comes out.
Need something that can handle the above.
Budget: £250
which cpu and m/b you got ?
and which case ? do you want it all to fit inside the case ?
im using a gigabyte P35C-DS3R mobo and an E6550@3.5 at the moment.. which I will upgrade to the q9450 when it comes out.
my case is this one.. http://www.modthebox.com/review296_1.shtml
and yes i wish to fit it inside case
anyone?
can radiators be mounted on 5.25" bays?
it depends how quiet you want it to be... the ones that fit into cd bays normally arnt the best... and a bit small.... the bigger the rad the better it cools the water so the less airflow you need (less fans / slower fans = quiet!)
how do you feel about case moding ?
youd probably be best off mounting a 3 x 120mil fan rad onto the top (outside) of the case (you can get decent grills etc.. for them so they look ok.... basically, cut holes into the top of the case for the airflow and hose connectors, stick the rad ontop of there, and then the fans ontop of that :-)
then you need to think about the pump/resevoure... to fit it in there id either go for a tube res mounted to the back of the case and a 12v pump (these used to suck, but some are pretty good now, -using one myself as we speak) or a pump with a built in resevoire...
Im guessing you want to water cool, the cpu, the 2xgfx cards and the m/b chipset ? if I were you.. Id just go for 8mil tubing... 12mil is better but harder to fit into a tight space....
tell me what you think of those ideas and Ill have a hunt around and post up some links of things to buy...
p.s. a GOOD custom system will probably cost the same / slightly more than a "ready2go" one.... but will be way way way better !
How about this http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605482 very good value for the price.
thats not a bad price.... but is that an actual photo of it ?
in the photo theres 2 rads... but in the wright up it only says theres 1 x 120mil rad ?
(which isnt enough fi you want it to be quiet)

ah, thats not a bad bit of kit then :-)
just make sure to get the right connections for your gfx and m/b blocks and it should be pretty good...
and it doesent amke much difference which order you connect the blocks/rads up in.... the normal tempreture rise of the water going through the cpu block is about 0.5C (and thats normnally the biggest heat producer)

thank you for the reply mate. very useful! can you link me the items that you would buy? (£200 budget but can stretch to 250 if needed) Im hoping to order by tomorrow so i can have my rig watercooled this friday :)

to be honest im quite worried about low priced products.. "you get what you pay for" always comes to my mind.. as i have been reading around various threads, a decent watercooling would be worth more than that?
thermaltake stuff is normally pretty good tbh...
you should price up 2 systems... 1 custom one, and one based around that with the extra blocks youll need... soo what the difference is and then decifde
edit: actually, after having a 2nd look at it... youll have quite a high heat load in your system (mostly because of the 2xgfx cards) so Id go for a custom system :-)
(Im kinf of assuming that you want it to be quiet and cold... if youre not so worried about high temps, things are much easier.... (high as in 50C)... the higher the water temp, the more efficient the rad. is :-)
ive had a quick browse through the thermaltake website.. how about this:
http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Liguid/DIY/cl-w0121/cl-w0121.asp combined with http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Liguid/Upgrade/cl-w0021/cl-w0021.asp to cool my cpu + chipset?
and this one to cool my gpu http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Liguid/All-In-One/cl-w0086/cl-w0086.asp
any thoughts?
Silent: http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Liguid/DIY/cl-w0097/cl-w0097.asp
the problem with those systems is the size/efficency of the rads... theyre too small and too in-efficient for what you want.... the whole idea of watercooling is that instead of having a heatsink with a small surface area is to have a rad. with a massive surface area... also, when you check (most) heatsinks, you also want a well designed rad that will spread the water/heat load out a lot... I used some rads. like the thermaltake ones years ago when I first got into watercooling... and theyre pretty ruish compaired to some of the others.., theyre basically a coper tube looped around a few times with some aluminium fins stuck to them to spread the heat around.... where as most custom rads. are based around rads. in cars etc.. for the one i linked below, the water goes in one side at the top, then flows down one side and back up the other... the tubes it flows down are flat and the width of the rad so the water is spread out a lot, which is much better (this is hard to explain in text... have a look at the pictures and youll know what i mean!)
rad: http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606800
res: http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=604979
(mounts onto the back of your case upright, you fill it at the top and the pump connections are at the bottom... so you dont have any problems with air)
pump: http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608203
if youre going to use a 12v pump (and you might as well tbh) this is pretty well rated, Im using one myself as we speak)
as for the aterblocks... well theres so many different ones about its hard to say... danger den are always wuite well rated... one thing to watch for is you dont want anything thats too flow restrictive, as they can cause problems with air locks / flow rates...
then for the gfx blocks the ones you linked look good to me... http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608629
Ive just realised, Ive linked you to the rad, res. and pump that Im using right now... I dont want to look like im pimping my opwn system or something like that.... its just that ive been doing this for a long time so I go for the best stuff, and advise people to use that same gear :-) (I actually started watercooling before I had any intenet access all thos years ago.... and I thought I was the only person doing it!)
Ill try to get you some photos of my system when i get back from work :-)
the other descision to make is wether you want to use 3/8inch hose or 1/2inch hose... 1/2 is better (ish) but tbh, theres not much difference in it... and to fit everything into your case you might as well go with 3/8.. so youll need hose barbs for eveything (res, rad, blocks... pump is already that size)
I quite like these http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608581 they are quite short, but theyre easier to fit into tight spots and they have an o-ring so seal themselvs against the blocks etc... :-)
for hose.... most of the stuff you can buy online is rubish, really really rubish, and even slightly good stuff is way overpriced... plus... I get the good stuff at cost price (about 60% less than you can buy it wholesale)... Im running out of 1/2inch stuff... but Ive got loads of 3/8 so if you do go for 3/8 just pm me your address and Ill send you a load for free :-)
(p.s. dont know if i said already, but ignore the spelling mistakes, im dislexic and vista has decided it doesent like my spellchecker!)
EDIT:
just realised i missed out the chipset block for the m/b.... googled youre m/b to see which blocks will fit but i came back with this one...
http://pclab.pl/zdjecia/artykuly/khedron/p35/GA-P35C-DS3R-2b.jpg ... (this is the right one, yeah?)
Im short on time so Ive only spent 5 min checking for blocks... but i think your best bet is to not bother with the m/b blocks at all, and just add a fan for them (youll need one, normally they catch some airflow from the cpu fan... which you wont have) a 120mil fan on 7v should be nice and quiet and cool both of those with ease... plus.. youll need some airflow over your ram anyway so you could kill 2 birds with one stone ;)
p.p.s. youll need 3 x 120mil fans for the rad too ! get nice thick ones, they work better at low rpm than most others, so you can run them quieter ;)
Knighty is the man when it comes to crazy cooling solutions, but dont forget to check the pics of my system here: http://www.tekforums.co.uk/posts/list/11345.page got my own custom watercooling setup running silently with just the 1 120mm fan (albeit with a fair bit of case modding to ease up the airflow for running @ 7v)
[edit: the point is, you dont have to spend silly money to get silent watercooling that performs, my kit was put together for ~ £120]

Knightly, many many thanks for your help. I really appreciate your time!
I have have researched on a new case: LianLi PC-V1000B PLUSII which can be easily modified to fit the watercooling kit inside. (i need the case to be 490mm or lower so it fits under my desk)
Now in my basket i have the following items: (thanks to you of course!)
radiator:
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606800 (recommended by you)
reservoir: i was thinking of going for this
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606862 (as I need averything to be mounted inside, any thoughts or other recommendations?)
pump:
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608203 (recommended by you)
CPU block:
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608418GPU block:
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608629since the new case I will buy is more spacious, can I go for 1/2inch hose?
seal/fitting:
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606880chipset: ??? none yet (I realy realy want to watercool the chipset as well cos im after a totally silent system; and yes that is the motherboard I have on the one you linked)
regarding the ram needing airflow: I do not overclock my ram, its just running at its rates speed (1000MHz). do I still need airflow for the ram?
3 x 120mm fan: ??? so many to choose from.. which is the most quiet? I do not need flashy lights, no led is fine.
Who was the one on here (or used to be on here) that had the huge watercooled system that involved a large water tank buried in his garden so no raidator was needed and as the pump was outside it was silent at computer.
Also beleive everything in his system had a block on it (CPU, mobo chips, GFX, Ram, PSU etc)

I vaguely remember that.
that was bladerunner.... hes a legond :o
(I bought a gfx card from him once, with his own suctom made cooler on it.... the one nvidia saw and liked so much the talked to him and copied the design !
(it wes something like that anyway, might have been ati)
(p.s. give me a few min and Ill post back a link to the w/c stuff!)
heres a few pics first... theyre the only ones I can find right now...
I need to have a good hunt round for photos, I used to have a computer submerged in oil at -30C... and a watercooled computer with 50foot of hose running down into my celler (down through the walls) and to a rad that was 6foot long, 2 foot wide and a foot thick !
and I just realised... the case youre looking to get is the same one Im using now... here...
i believe the case is easily "modifiable".. do you think it can fit all the w/c stuff inside?
ok.. back to your questions !
for the res... that one looks ok... Ive never seen one in person, but a quick google for more photos and it doesent look all that great to me...
what about this one ? http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606890
my little brother uses the single drive version of that one and really likes it... tho he wishes he had the dual bay one, if he shifts his computer around too much his pump can suck some air... you wont have that problem with the dual bay one ;)
(EDIT: I only just realised I didnt post a link to a cpu block)
for the cpu block... the problem with that block is you cant see inside it to know how flow restrictive it is... and the only thing I can find is this... http://ekwaterblocks.com/shop/images/supeme2.jpg (which doesent help much)
the thing is... the more flow restrictive a block is, through forcing water theough smaller spaces, spreading it out more / more water turbelance etc.. the more efficent it is... but as they get more and mroe flow restrictive you have more and more problems with air... lower flow rates and the posibility of air locks can be a right pain in the arse.... and this is the important bit... it makes naff all difference.... when you compair one of these ultra fine uber turbalant blocks to something like the origonal danger den maze which was like this (http://www.employees.org/~slf/mofaq/wb-dd-maze2.jpg) inside, theres naff all difference, in real world situations, you would (at most) notice one half of a degree difference in temps... (at most!) the good thing about blocks like the danger den maze etc.. are that you have no air problems, air goes into the block and comes right out again :-)
(I cant express what a pain in the arse air lock problems can be... theres plenty of times Ive had to hook friends systems up to the mains water supply to get enough pressure to push the air out of a system when they havnt listend to me about this)
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608575 this looks like a better block to me.... still not as free flowing as Id like, but better than most of the compertition, plus, at least you can see inside it for any air bubbles etc.. ;)
as for fans.... I havnt seen these ones before... but they look good to me...
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=607850
so quiet youd have to pretty much stick your ear into the spinning blades to here them, and thats at stock volts so is better for your psu ;)
well, after a bit of looking around, Id say this http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606447 is probably the best m/b block for you (youll need 2 of them)
pretty good water flow rates, and importantly... very compact ! (so sqeeeeeeeez them in)
and yeah, unfortunatly, youll defenatly need some airflow over the ram.... ram doesent produce much heat, but without some airflow cooling it, it will slowly get hotter and hotter untill your system crashes etc... :( you could get another of those 800rpm 120mil fans I linked to above ?
(its always nice to have a bit of airflow over the m/b too anyway)
oh, and for the 3/8 hose vs 1/2 hose.... personally id go for the 3/8inch stuff, my system is 1/2 right now only because I re-used a lot of my old kit which was already 1/2inch.... the 3/8 stuff is much easier to use, you can get plenty of flow through it, and youre pump will be 3/8 anyway (even if the conections are 1/2 most are 3/8 inside anyway) years ago before watercooling was so mainstream flow rates were really important because the radiators avalible sucked big time... but now with really great rads. the water in the system is nice and cool (like, 1C above room temp) so flow rates arnt so important.
p.s. my brother has the same case as I do (the one youre looking to buy) so Ive emailed him for some photos of his rig... his is all internal, he uses the bay res, an ephiem pump (240v) 2 gfx cards in sli (w/c too) and has two 3 fan rads mounted in the bottom ! damn it was a tight fit getting it all in ! especially with his 1000w PSU sticking out a mile !
also another p.s. if I were you id buy some adapter brackets to mount your HDs in the cd drive bays so you can remove the HD brackets from the bottom and fit the pump etc... there.... alos, it was a tight fit mounting my rad to the top of the case... maybe you could fir yours in the bottom like my little brother did ? also a tight fit down there.... but its out of the way of everything else so its not such a big deal.... :-)
Quote from: bimmerboiii believe the case is easily "modifiable".. do you think it can fit all the w/c stuff inside?
yeah, look at the pic of mine above your post, I could have fited a res. and the pump inside pretty easy if I wanted too :-)
the 6 watercooled HDs take up quite a bit of room down there, which is a problem you wont have!
you wont beleave how much stuff we crammed into my brothers when you see the pics :o
another great help mate..
seems that youre the guru of h20 cooling, ill go follow your advice..

I got a 750w modular psu so I hope that wouldnt be a problem.
already found the HDD adapter to fit my HDD to the 5.25" bay. (although from a different store as i didnt see one from tekheads)
is that all I need? did we miss anything? (how about the coolant/water thingy?)
(P.S. looking forward to see pics of your brothers pc, wana see how he crammed all the stuff in it)
yeah you will need some coolant, i would go for the Feserone stuff
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/department?department=190&sort=0&filterId=430&filterValue=Feser%20One
Unless knighty has any better ideas as he has done a good job so far:)
yeah those fans are a bit expensive... (I forgot to look at price lol)
what about these ?
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=606359
half the price, theyre 20db instead of 8 (and iirc, that means 4 times as much noise!) tho tbh.. theyre quiet as hell, so you wont be able to hear them anyway ;)
for the m/b blocks... these look like they should fit in well too... http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=608379 tho theyre quite expensive at £30 a pop :o
youll need some hose clips too... a quick google found them here... http://www.dieselveg.com/hose_clips.htm (you want the very top ones) most other places are trying to charge £1.20 each for them ! (which is a total rip)
as for the hose fittings... youre going to need a set for the cpu, 1 for the gfx, 2 for the m/b, 1 for the res, 1 for the rad, so 6 of those :o (this is where the cost of all the little things starts adding up!)
for water... just use tap water, but add at least 40% anti-freez to it (it stops corosion) you should be able to get it from any garage... theres two different types... you want the blue stuff (tbh the other stuff is hardly used these days anyway, and you probably couldent find it if you wanted to!)
and you need to pm my your address so i can send you some hose ;)
edit: just read Kris reply... and dont want to slag tek off (because i really like the store tbh) but special coolant type stuff is only really any use if you want bright / uv water etc... otherwise tap water is just as good ;)
tho kris might be able to point you to some adaptors to fit a HD into a CD drive bay and save you on the postage from somewhere else?
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605155
Reduce noise too apparantly (not used them myself)
I havnt used them myself either... but theyre suposed to be pretty good, probably twice the price of the normal cheap brackets... but you only need 1 pair and once youre watercooled you start to notice HD noise, so theyre worth a try :)
Ah yes it was bladerunner, I remember about his own made blocks aswell :)
I got some of those original blocks :D

Thanks knightly.. I think I have all I need now right? Although I was shocked on the total of my basket. went way over my budget. Ill be leaving out the chipset blocks for now (although I will keep in mind the ones you recommended)
Thanks for the recommendation Kris, will give it a go. Though I have 3 HDD and I understand a pair will only fit 2?
Id suggest de-ioised water over tap water, theres less crap in it, and 1L is only 55p from wilkos :) (youd still need to add antifreeze to it)
Bladerunners site is at http://zfz.com -)
Ah cool cheers!

p.s. I forgot to say before about the ram cooling.... yeah, youll need a fan there even if its not overclocked, ram doesent produce much heat, but without any airflow it just heats up and heats up untill your pc crashes :(
(with no m/b blocks youll need some airflow over those heatsinks anyway :o )
I think Ive come a bit late to this thread.
How about one of my reservoirs for the DDC pump ? it would keep things compact.

I would not use tap water! Its worth spending the extra extra 45p and going for de-ionized instead. Either that or just get some feserone.
that is a nice looking res :-)
pah, tap water is fine, have been using it for years !
(with 40% anti freeze)
:p

Cheers :D I just got some test results back today and Ive had a permanent grin on my face :nana:
Its ok if your using 40% antifreeze and water but thats going to decrease the performance. If your using antifreeze I would go for a lower concentration with de-ionized water or use feserone. Feser one is a decent price compared to fluid-xp or similar liquids.
