Well everyone thought this, but it is not from what has come out this/last week.
It will be a true continuation, the story will have hiro stuk in the past for a bit, (could he be the start of his family, could he be that dude in the story?)

Who they are starting to come out in the public eye and how that reaction goes down
What every happens to sylar, the bad dude story start to come out, heroes mingle, and more

I think they will be saving the history single character story arc a little for latter seasons, which will be cool.

The spin off will be about individuals as well

So we expect Peter to come back... but is the general consensus that Nathan is gone?

Have to admit I didnt like them killing off Linderman (if he is actually dead) and Nathan.

He can heal himself so who knows
Well Yeah Peter will be back, in the alternate future he blew up and was alive, just with a scar on his face, but he can survive blowing up.

Peter will survive as he has Claires powers, whos to say that Nathan didnt just take him up really high, then fly off just before the explosion? (leaving Peter in mid air ofc).

Although the 5 years in the future thing can still happen, as Peter is presumably still alive (with the nuke power).

But surely, if Peter Petrelli can absorb the powers of the people he comes into conact with, Why has he not absorbed all of Sylars powes?

He has and if you watch the series you would know.

When sylar first meets him in the apartment when he eventually puts the glass in his head, peter chucks him back against the wall when he heals after having his head cut into him and he can only have got the physic connect ability from him.
And in the final episode the reason he was exploding and could not control it has he said "I have absorbed his powers, i cant stop it" he got the nuke power twice over and that is why it was out of control.

Peter can take powers just by being near people BUT the series showed how he could not control them, he had to learn them and needed help in doing so and still even in the last episode he did not have full practise or the confidence in himself.
Sylar Took the abilities and Learnt how they worked, his process was more graphic and slower but from that he could "learn" the ability fully and so had far better control of them due to his ability of "seeing how things tick"

Yeah, that makes sense.  When he said hed absorbed his power, I thought he was refering to teds.   Forgot about the whole death thing there.
