Title: How to crash XPs "updater"
Post by: maximusotter on May 09, 2007, 19:47:26 PM
So Ive been running XP today as I had a bunch of printing to do, and the updater thing wants me to "update!". Woo hoo! It wants me to install software that confirms that I own the copy of XP that Im running. Draconian, no? I do own this OEM copy, but I dont want such ware on my boxen. So I tick, "I do not agree" then click "continue". The program crashes.

While Ive got your eyes, how do I switch off the "security center" in XP? I really dont need the annoyance of it.

EDIT:

After twenty minutes, it "uncrashes" and shows a box with a radio button with the option "do not ask me about this update again" or some such thing. When you tick this radio button, the "Next" button gets shaded. The only choice is to cancel, and be reminded to install "software assurance" or whatever that craps called next day, or to go back and agree to have big brother on your box.

Microsoft: you have no choice, sucker! Nastiest OS ever.

Um, just turn off automatic updating?

Then do it via IE (oh yer youll be running the super-safe FF!). Well either way get to the update page on the MS webby, and click Hide on the Authentication/Validation updates. Problem sorted.

its always good to have a variety of hammers, personally I favour my 14lb "installation" hammer for most tasks, but when you need the steam driven 100lb "reformat" hammer there really is no substitute.
