Streaming radio over a LAN

I have a desktop machine running Ubuntu Feisty which I use mostly as a file server. It sits next to my Stereo system.

I also have a Laptop, running Ubuntu Gutsy, which I use for most of my day-to-day computing.

I am contemplating buying myself a DAB tuner since my favorite radio station is DAB and internet only, and my internet bandwidth is a little low for streaming. Idealy I would like to be able to listen to DAB radio while using my laptop.

It occurs to me that if I could stream the audio across the LAN then I could listen to it using any of my computers.

It looks to me as if I should be able to accomplish this using Icecast and a separate DAB tuner feeding into the line in on my soundcard, but I wondered if there was a better way involving a PCI DAB card.

Im willing to update the desktop to Gutsy if necessary, but only if it will make the process easier.

thanks for any ideas.

In this day an age i would recommend using usb rather than pci.

They are generally smaller and easier to get your hands on, especially as they are slowly fading out pci on motherboards.

Also means you can move it to another machine including your laptop at a moments notice.

I did a quick google and found this

looks reasonable and i am sure there are more around to buy

thanks for the suggestions Sweenster,

it has been my experiance with other items of hardware that PCI devices work better under Linux than USB ones, though the gap is narrowing. I was rather hoping that someone on here would have got a DAB tuner working under Linux and would be able to suggest one which certainly works.

At the moment Im leaning towards an external tuner through the sound card since the PCI/USB card route doesnt seem to be particularly well travelled.

Okay let me get this right in my head:

* You want to hook up a DAB radio VIA your MIC or a PCI/USB DAB Device.
* You wish to do this in Ubuntu
* E.g. You wish to setup a Shoutcast server.

Only way I can see this happening is:

Setting up a Shoutcast server local to the network then choosing either:

If the sound is going to be taking constantly from the MIC point

or

The sound is going to be taking from a file that is constantly being written to from the MIC point. So this would add on Encoding time.

You could do this pretty easily just using a MIC point and just allowing it to talk via the MIC constantly, the Shoutcast software should allow you to do this.

thats about the size of it yes. Only reason for going the computer controled tuner route is to allow me to re-tune via remote control, although TBH I only listen to 1 or 2 stations so that wont be an issue very often.

Firstly dont use the MIC port - you want the line in port as I the out put from the external DAB radio will be at "line level".

Ive done exactly this setup with an external FM radio and Linux. You need 2 things:

1.) an icecast server (opensource soutcast)
2.) darkice

darkice will take the input from a soundcard and stream it to an icecast server.

you should be able to install both using aptitude or synaptic and both are relatively simple to get going.

Actually the FM radio was quite cool, (some dlink thing) it had a usb connection as well but all that was used for was tuning the thing. And there were command line tools to do this. So I could just SSH into the server and retune :)

Dunno if there is anything similar for DAB

Why not  1) buy a DAB Radio adapter, or 2) buy an Internet Radio
