using the gigabyte "et6" over-clocking program (what a crap name) I've had this running 24/7 stable for about 2 months...

EDIT: photos to follow.... that program lowers the cpu speed when you don't much power... getting new pics !

(ignore the voltage, it says 12v when it means 1.2v )

I'm sure it was at 4.8ghz, but now I've messed with it the hardest that program will push it is 4.3ghz

any ideas ?  can I push it much further/harder ?

watercooled, max full load temp is 43'c

Hey mate, this is the unlocked one I gather?

I Only did mine with an Asus board by its bios basic overclock features and all seems running well but I been wondering how you push these. Been a while since touching this stuff.

I run mine at 4.7GHz most of the time but I got it to 4.8GHz rock solid, but patched the bios and lost the settings then couldn't be arsed to re-tinker with them (I didn't write them down) 


You should be able to get up to 4.7 odd easily with just some vcore tweaks, I'm sure there's a thread discussing this on here

I found an online guid for another gigabyte board so copied that....
(but the voltage setup on that board was different)

I'll up the voltage to 1.3, then knock the multiplier up to 46/47 and see what happens ?


thos board comes with all that update bios settings in real-time in windows stuff... is that any good ?  know a good program to use it ?  the gigabyte one was naff

slight problem... at idle cpuz says 4.5ghz (as above)

but when I run y-cruncher (spuer pi on all cores prog thingie)

the multiplier keeps dropping down and lowering the cpu speed ?

it's jumping around 38/39/40 ?

jumps straight back up to 45 at idle


any idea whay could be causing it ? google isn't telling me much...  could it be throttling due to low Vcore to keep stable ?

going to leave it running a while to check temps.... will up v core in 20min

looks like it's throttling on temperature

cpuid is giving me core temps of 92'C

but... as soon as i close the stress test the temps drop to 60'C (instantly)

as soon as I run it again... they jump back to 90'C

water-cooled, water is cool, water block feels cool, 99.99% sure block/cpu contact is good

assuming this must be some sort of error... will keep googling

idle temps are reported at ~55, but ~42 if i check in the bios

That sounds all kinds of wrong, mine idles at sub 30c on air

gpu block is after the cpu block,

gpu reports 32'C

so water temp must be under 30'C

I'll try re-seating the cpu waterblock when i get a chance !

Those temps are far too high with that Vcore and water cooling, under normal day to day gaming etc my 2500k at 4.8GHZ never hits 60c and idles in the 30's. 

CUPID is quite accurate in my experience, are you sure you have the latest version?   

Try another prog to see if it is misreading the temps: http://www.techinferno.com/downloads/?did=9 If it is not the software I would check the contact with your block.

I thought I would check my CPU temp with it not clocked much at the moment after an hour or so on battlefied 3.
Temp was 37c, lol.
Just wish they would get GPU's to the same standards.

cpuid and throttle stop both report the same temperatures (34/35)

but the gigabyte easytune6 utility is giving about 10'C lower (25/26)

haven't touched the block yet.... it's a right pita to get at... it'll probably be the weekend before I get it done...

going by the bios temps... it does look the I'm reading about 10'C hotter than it really is


there must be something iffy going on.... as soon as I run a benchmark the temp climbs to 95'C in about 3 seconds... and falls back don in about 3 seconds when I close the benchmark ?

Strange how the chip is suddenly 20c lower at idle compared to the screen shot you posted above  Sandy Bridge chips are sensitive to heat tbh I wouldn't be happy using it even at default speeds unless I was 100% sure the contact with the block was good.   

Only other thing that springs to mind is a faulty sensor in the mobo.

Edit: another thing to look at is to see what your Vcore is doing when you do start a Benchmark and the turbo function kicks in, is it jumping up a lot? CPU-z will be the best for this so long as the benchmark priority isn't set to high. 

cpuid is reporting the same temps as before... but in the bios it's at mid 20's

it's been going like this for months... so it'll be ok till the weekend :-)
