As you probably know I moved back in with my dad recently, and as such I had to get a net connection sorted sharpish (within 7 days - inc ordering and recieving router - thanks Tekheads! /kissass).

I went with ADSL24 (//www.adsl24.co.uk) based on nothing more than googling for a decent ISP.

So I went through the ordering process online, and was offered what kind of service I wanted. Basically a guaranteed/more stable service (2meg) or a risky faster service (8meg). Tests on my dads phone line suggested that it wasnt able to handle more than about 2meg, so I ummed and arred, and eventually rang ADSL24 to ask what they suggested as a test of the phone support. After only a couple of rings they answered and suggested that I followed the results of the line test and order the more stable  (but slower - 2meg) option, I thanked the helpful chap and selected the 8meg option (what can I say, I live on the edge). It paid off taking the risk.  8-)

They told me the connection would be activated on the 18th. Lo and behold the 18th arrived and I had a net connection. After much faffing about with microfilters (my dad is an electrician by trade, and therefore thinks that telephones lines are the same, i.e. can be taken all over the house and have multiple things attached without any major problems), I got a lovely stable net connection. It was a little up and down for the first 72hrs, something Id been forewarned about by ADSL24. After that it was fine (connection speed lowered from 8128 to around 6800 after the training period though, must sort that).

Ive had consistanly excellent speeds, no disconnections, and generally what Id expect from an ISP. The best thing? No throttling. Of anything. At all.

The downside to this is the limits. The package Im on is 30gb peak (8am - 10pm Monday to Friday), and 300gb off peak (all other times, all weekend etc) per month. I thought 30gb was a little low, but tbh its pretty good. I recieve an email every morning stating how much Ive got left, how much Ive used, etc. It got to about 4 days before the end of the month and I still had about 6gb left on peak, so I battered the hell out of it.  :nana:

The only problem I have is the limited payment options. Mastercard, Visa CC, or any Visa card. No Switch/Maestro. Id prefer to pay by Maestro as Id eventually like to get rid of my Mastercard, but they also offer a Direct Debit option so I can get around it.

ADSL24 (//www.adsl24.co.uk)

Pros :

NO THROTTLING!!!!!!  :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Great phone support (so far).
Consistantly excellent service.
Lovely download speeds from all sources (torrents etc).

Cons :

Monthly limits.
Limited payment options.

I envy you - Im still on 1Kb/s "broadband" with Nildram.

Im migrating to Plusnet tomorrow so the throttling will be over!  :nana:

Im with TitanADSL, think they seem the same aort of company, as it sounds exactly the same as you have described. Its only a 1 month contract as well which is good.

Youll not find an ISP that do billing via Switch/Maestro, as they dont allow continuous authorisation.
This means you need contacting every time the billing is due for auth, whereas the other cards dont.

They sound pretty decent, which is hard to find in an ISP these days!

I have to say I used to always go with the smaller companies such as freedom2surf, demon, etc (when they where small that is) but recently I said screw it and went for Skys £10/month package.

I get 16mbit constantly and there are no solid usage limits, its excellent... ive never had to call customer support so I do not know what they are like, but all is good for such a large company!

Be do billing via Switch/Maestro and Solo and they dont seem to have any problems charging my card every month without contacting anyone?

Yeah, thats right actually!! Cant remember why I chose Titan over ADSL24 now, as I did look at them...........I maybe just tossed a coin, lol.

A response (from Enta, not ADSL24) regarding using Switch/Maestro to pay :

QuoteOngoing payments are not accepted for Maestro as our banks no longer allow this. The Maestro card can only be used for the initial payment.

They are supposed to ask your permission before they take any payment on a switch maestro.
At least thats what Orange said with my phone.

No issues whatsoever with paying by Switch / Maestro for our employer.

Sounds as though Orange were making excuses to be honest.

Actually they did mention something to do with it during training.
Subs can come from a Direct Debit, or credit card.  Not a switch/maestro.

QuoteHow can I pay for my account?
There are 3 ways you can pay for your account:

a) Make all your payments by Direct Debit
b) Make one payment (for example an Activation fee) by Switch / Maestro, Visa Delta or a Credit Card, and the remaining payments by Direct Debit
c) Make all your payments by Credit Card

Please note that Broadband Basic is only available if Direct Debit is used for subscription payments.

Unfortunately we cannot accept Debit Cards (including Switch / Maestro and Visa Delta) for your continuing monthly payments, due to restrictions imposed by our Bank.
