This sort of thing has been happening for a few years now, note the Levi jeans case amongst others.
You just get them to asia or some place and then to EU, thats how you get around with it and like the jeans mentioned its been going on for ages.
Surely this is to do with stopping piracy.

They are stopping you buying legit games from other regions even though they want you to buy a region-free console. Makes no sense.

This is about Sony milking it for all its worth. Something about your profile says you are a Playstation Fan, but you have to admit they are just being greedy. Grey imports of consoles was happening right back at the Master System, Sega never gave it a thought though because they where region free, and the grey import market is very very small in comparison to the mainstream consumer market.
Sony are looking to utterly blow the competition away with the PS3, and its failing to ignite masses of interest outside the hardcore PS userbase. I considered a PS2, though decided instead to get rid of my Playstation because i never really used it. MS are going to release both a HD-DVD add-on and a HD-DVD integrated player for the 360. Nintendo have said "We make games machines" and rather than filling something full of features they are doing what they are good as. Nintendo have been written off when they released the SNES and the N64, and the Gamecube. They innovate, Sony havent done anything truely origional with the PS3, just made it more powerful, bigger and heavier.
In Europe the Wii is likely to be a huge seller, the US traditionall prefers "Domestic" products (just look at the crap cars they produce). Australia is waiting until march now for the PS3, so i would guess that the Wii will be heavily marketed there.
I dont "want" to see Sony fallon its arse with the PS3, but Many people can see it happening. i mean, they haven;t even got virbtation tech in their controllers! Even the "crappy" Wii and 360 have that!

Sony are going to screw them selves over but there are still a lot of kids out there who would swear by the Playstation as the number one console.. When in real terms they are a money grabbing company, who really couldnt care as long as money is rolling in?
I think Lik Sang where great and they have shut there doors completetly meaning Wii imports are going to be a pain, prices in the EU are way to high :(
